Pope on a Rope: Favorability Rating Falls in U.S. Poll
Posted on Apr 16, 2010

Pope Benedict XVI hasn’t exactly won the hearts and minds of Americans in recent weeks, according to the results of a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released Friday, which showed the wear and tear of the ongoing clergy sex scandal on the pope’s public standing among Catholic and non-Catholics alike. —KA

CNN:

Fifty-nine percent of American Catholics questioned in the poll have a favorable view of the pope, down 19 points from February. Among all Americans, the slippage is even greater: from 59 percent in February to just 35 percent today.

“Only a quarter of U.S. Catholics have an unfavorable view of the pope, but they don’t seem satisfied with his track record on the growing and persistent scandal within the church,” CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said.

7. Asking people if they want a priest at the hospital
is awkward. I work at a Catholic hospital and when admitting people I have to ask if they want the religious to visit them to pray/support. My preceptor told me to ask "Do you want a priest or a nun to visit you during your stay?" rather than "do you want a member of our spiritual care team to visit?" because she has found most people don't know what the second question means. In light of the scandal of pedophile priests, I feel kind of weird asking it. So now I am asking-- Do you want a religious person or clergy to visit?

The priest at our hospital is very nice, technically he is a priest but mostly had joined a religious order and lived in a religious community for most of his professional career. There are lots of nuns since the hospital was started by them. Plus some local priests come in to visit their parishoners as well as clergy of other religions. We don't ask anyone what their religion is anymore when doing the admission assessment.
