He was in a black tux with a white tie, white hankerchief, and a white rose as a boutineer. His date was also in black and white and looked amazing. A handsome young couple on their way to their prom. What could be more normal, more American, yes even more southern. So why did it make national news and why am I writing about it? Because Derrick's date is Richard and not Rachel.
I went to prom with a girl. I tried so hard to make myself actually want her in the way I should have but I just couldn't. Instead I sat in my car with her and couldn't even manage a romantic kiss. It wasn't fair to her let alone me. So why did I do it? Because in 1986 boys didn't take boys to the prom. Heck boys didn't even kiss boys back then. I am so proud of those boys who did what I couldn't do. Thanks to them and what they risked, the next person will have an easier time. Derrick, at least temporarily, gave up his parents to be who he is with who he loves. Ironicly Derrick's dad is teacher of the year at his school. Not having been in his classroom, I won't comment upon that. But he sure isn't father of the second, let alone year. I hope, and frankly think, his parents will come around.
People like Derrick are busy rewriting the stories that gay people live. I thought I knew my story back then. I certainly didn't think marriage would be part of it. I didn't think fatherhood would be either. Now they both could be if things happen correctly. It would be great if in a few years a gay couple goes to prom in a small town in Georgia, or Alabama, or Mississippi and no one cares. No competing facebook pages, no protests, no press. Just two boys or two girls, dressed to the nines, enjoying a fine spring evening. When that actually happens, Derrick, who got his prom, and Constance, who didn't get hers, will be a part of the reason why.
