Interesting tidbit about MSNBC's "McVeigh Tapes" -- they aren't real!
The audio is from a newspaper reporter's interview. There was no video, so MSNBC simply made it up, using CGI and composite images. I guess since it's the audio that is the focus, maybe this isn't a massive big deal, but it seems kind of shady to me to be promoting these "tapes" without mentioning that you'd be watching a computer simulation.

3. Sure it computes...
http://www.buffalonews.com/2010/04/14/1019216/one-of-our-own-msnbc-takes-a-chilling.html

There are no videos of the interview, so MSNBC just made 'em up. Can't very well do an hour sensationalist TV special without video, can you? So they took the audio tapes and lip synced up some CGI animation of "McVeigh."

4. It almost gives the extremist the go-ahead to give the GOP their much-needed attack
SOMEONE has to do it! Rush has already declared it will be Obama's fault, too, further giving the go-ahead to the lunatics, and absolving them of responsibility when they eventually kill hundreds of Americans. "Twern't muh fawlt! Obammy made me do it!" It's coming, and MSNBC is helping. It'll be a great summer blockbuster news story prior to the desperate election.

5. I want people to hear it so they will call terrorism what it is
Here in Austin TX, the news people keep calling the small plane terrorism at the IRS offices "a tragic crash", and other "soft" names. It needs to called what it is: DOMESTIC TERRORISM All acts such as McVeigh ans Stack need to called terrorism because that's what it is. I am so happy that Maddow has titled her show with these key words: domestic terrorist

10. I agree with you. I think it's a good idea to let people know...
how the right-wing lunatics can get out of hand. We're seeing some of this extremism now with the so-called arms march/rally, and those militia groups popping up again.

11. Yes, I agree.
We need to know the mindset of those who would kill with no remorse. I think it's important to learn just how deep that hatred is, and what feeds it.

8. Rachel Maddow on the Daily Show...
said that only one reporter was allowed access to interview McVeigh during the entire time before his execution. She said that McVeigh during those interviews, confessed to the crime and talked about the why of his beliefs. I think since they only have audio and because they can, they created the visual images to go along and make the story more interesting. But what is important are McVeigh's words.

9. CGI
I think they are making it clear that the images are CGI generated. I think they made the McVeigh CGI graphics not as good as possible so the viewer would know they are watching a re-creation, not an original video.

In this season of violent political rhetoric, a lot from ELECTED OFFICIALS, amazingly enough, I think it's very important to understand how McVeigh thought about things.

Understanding McVeigh better may help America prevent the next Oklahoma City bombing.

In this vein, I would also like to see Osama Bin Laden himself sit down for a one to one with Katie Couric. I bet Osama would at least be able to name all the newspapers he reads!

15. I Hope That Right Up Front Before This Special Begins That MSNBC & Rachel.....
say that what you are about to see is a 'visual recreation' or CGI and that the words are those of McVeigh but the video of him is generated by computer for effect. That they felt that it would be more compelling to both hear and see him than just air his words. I think this is necessary for both the credibility of Rachel and MSNBC that they state this up-front. Also - I think if they do this it will be less likely to be attacked in any way by the RW commentators like Rush, Beck, Hannity, et al. I got to think that they all are going to have some snarky slant on this program - and if I were MSNBC & Rachel I would do everything to minimize their spinning of this. I don't want to see Rachel discredited for this program. I know that they (the RW) will do anything to discredit her. I hope she realizes this and takes necessary steps to prevent that and I hope that MSNBC allows her to.

17. Rachel
I have a lot of faith that Rachel will handle this with respect for her Rhodes Scholar standards of journalism foremost. Rachel seems to strive to be very accurate with her facts, and I don't see her selling out her principals just for this show!

Rachel sometimes does primer segments just to educate her viewers on what she's about to cover. I like that approach.

Ps - Rachel met her significant other while doing some gardening work. A Rhodes Scholar doing some gardening on the side? That's pretty cool.

18. Same here - I want to see this
And it's TV - they need images so I have no problem with an actor or CGI on this one.

I'm disappointed there are some here who want to censor this or criticize Rachel Maddow before the show is even aired. From excerpt I saw last week on her show it is chilling and we damn well need a reminder what this type or rhetoric spawned in the 90's.

13. You didn't notice the bad CGI images?
It's obviously CGI and it's probably done deliberately in a poor manner so people would understand that it was fake since none of the interviews were filmed.

That doesn't take away from the taped interviews.

Do you think they shouldn't air the tapes just because they have no video?

19. Let's read the press release before getting outraged
(NEW YORK, NY) ” MARCH 31, 2010 ” Fifteen years after the Oklahoma City bombing, Rachel Maddow brings viewers the inside story on the deadliest terror attack on U.S. soil prior to the events of Sept. 11. 168 lives were lost and more then 500 people were injured that day and now, on Monday, April 19 (9-11 PM/ET), MSNBC viewers will hear Timothy McVeigh's chilling confession in his own words for the first time in "The McVeigh Tapes: Confessions of an American Terrorist." Drawing from 45 hours of never-before-released interview audiotapes recorded during McVeigh's prison stay, the film reveals the bomber's descriptions of the planning and execution of the horrific attack and offers insight into how a decorated American soldier became a dangerous, anti-government terrorist.

The two-hour documentary employs state-of-the-art computer recreations of the interview with McVeigh and his actions on and leading up to the day of the bombing. It also provides biographical background of McVeigh's life and the path that led to his transformation into an ˜American terrorist. In addition, survivors and family members of the bombing victims are given a voice in the film, bravely stepping forward to offer the final word on the true impact and meaning of McVeigh's brutal attack.

Nine years after his execution, McVeigh's voice from the grave resonates today as once again anti-government extremism is on the rise. The audiotapes acquired for the film were originally recorded as research for the book ˜American Terrorist: Timothy McVeigh and the Oklahoma City Bombing, by Buffalo News reporters Lou Michel and Dan Herbeck, who are interviewed in the film. Excerpts from the audiotapes will be released in the coming weeks.

"The McVeigh Tapes: Confessions of an American Terrorist," is co-produced by MSNBC and Peacock Productions. Mike Rubin is Vice President, Long Form Programming, MSNBC. Scott Hooker is Senior Executive Producer, MSNBC. Timothy Smith is Senior Producer, MSNBC. Sharon Scott is the Executive-in-Charge of Peacock Productions; Keith McKay is Executive Producer; Toby Oppenheimer is the Producer; and Benjamin Ringe and Knute Walker are Executive Producers, Peacock Productions.

Peacock Productions is an award-winning, nonfiction production company that combines the editorial expertise, technical resources and seasoned production talent of NBC News to offer a wide-range of programming to broadcast, cable and digital entities with worldwide reach.

They are damned upfront while the tapes are McVeigh's voice they are doing video recreations.
