Monsanto Declares P.R. War Against Food Inc. Film

Monsanto Declares P.R. War Against Food Inc. Film

The Monsanto Co. is leading Big Ag’s PR offensive against Food Inc., the searing documentary on industrial agriculture that opened Friday. That’s not surprising. The chemical giant comes off as the biggest bogeyman in the film, which focuses on the company’s genetic seed patents, alleged bullying of farmers and efforts to influence politicians.

What is surprising is that Monsanto is tying its response to the movie to a discredited front group called the Center for Consumer Freedom. It seems too obviously payback for at least $200,000 that Monsanto has contributed to the supposedly nonprofit organization.

The company’s PR offensive against Food Inc. is no ham-handed reaction. It includes a very slick (of course) web page featuring an interactive seven-question quiz and the following characterization of the movie:

Food, Inc. is a one-sided, biased film that the creators claim will “lift the veil on our nation’s food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that’s been hidden from the American consumer.” Unfortunately, Food, Inc. is counter-productive to the serious dialogue surrounding the critical topic of our nation’s food supply.

2. It's a great film. I hate what Monsanto has done to farmers and
consumers all around the world so I'm glad to see it's shaking them up.

3. Opened Friday? Weird, that documentary has been available on DVD for a while.
It can be viewed streaming at Netflix, and the DVD has been for sale at Amazon for a couple of months now.

That said, Monsanto can kiss my ass. The lawsuits they've subjected people to for doing nothing more than keeping the seeds from their own crops (Monsanto claims this is patent infringement, farmers must buy new seed from Monsanto each year, they can't keep the seeds from the prior years).

Hell, they even sued a guy whose business was cleaning seeds for use into submission by saying that he was promoting others to violate Monsanto patents.

4. Monsanto can go straight to hell
They need to be slapped down big time. They're just pissed off because Food, Inc. exposed them for who they REALLY ARE.

5. Actually, from a certain perspective, Monsanto's response makes me
want to watch the film. It gives the movie credibility. Monsanto must be scared.

7. They should be scared
they have almost single-handedly destroyed both our seed supply and the non-corporate US Ag industry.

8. Yet, they don't sue for libel.
So instead monsanto goes for the spin.

Food, Inc - 1 monsanto - 0.

10. Saw this tonight. Stunning. Agribusiness should be running scared from a government
that has teeth and refuses to allow them such monopoly. But we know they have bought Congress, so that won't happen.

13. I saw it on PBS again tonight...
Those pigs knew what was coming and their screams of terror were just too much for Mrs WGreen.

I think the chickens knew as well. You could see it in their faces.

Think I am seriously going to consider about becoming a Vegetarian or at least just buy organic meat that treats their stock with dignity.

14. Food, Inc. convinced me to go fully organic, meat and all
and yes, those animal scenes were painful to watch. I hope this film helps family-run farms make a comeback.
