Radical Rush blames Clinton for OK City bombing; the press yawns

April 21, 2010 1:14 pm ET by Eric Boehlert

Using the 15th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing to smear Bill Clinton and coddle the government-hating militia movement, Rush Limbaugh this week did his best to justify Timothy McVeigh's deadly act of right-wing vengeance by shifting the blame onto the former president of the United States.

Even by Limbaugh's baseless standards, the insurrectionist attack was an extraordinary one -- "President Clinton's ties to the domestic terrorism of Oklahoma City are tangible." Yet the contemptible claim didn't generate much news interest. In fact, a search of the Nexis archives for Tuesday failed to turn up a single outlet that highlighted Limbaugh's attack on Clinton as news.

The sad truth is, collectively, the corporate media have let right-wing talkers cross so many lines of common decency and accountability over the past year that it seems most pundits don't think Limbaugh and company should be held to any kind of civilized standard. Nothing he says at this point seems to trigger any sort of visceral response.

But why isn't Limbaugh held accountable for his words and actions? Why wasn't it considered big news that the de facto leader of the Republican Party went to a place previously considered unconscionable and unpardonable by the press corps?

1. Hmmm....
Many of us have argued that the best way to get rid of these right wing hate talkers is to ignore them. If they have no publicity and no listeners, they will soon be unemployed relics of a hateful historical era.

2. This statement, ""President Clinton's ties to the domestic terrorism of Oklahoma City are tangible"
went unchallenged, as if it were fact. I agree, if they were all ignored, that'd be one thing. But we both know what is ignored is really selective. As for no listeners, I don't see that that's happening at all, so why doesn't that librul media call this asshat out on his lies?

3. People fear him. Remember a while back when a couple ofSenators
contradicted Rush or made some critical remarks about him.
These were Republican Senators. Rush let loose over the airways
against these Senators --guess what they PUBLICLY APOLOGISED
to Rush. The message was loud and clear. Do not mess with
Rush--he is more powerful than a U.S. Senator.

Therefore, I assume the Media is not going to mess with him
because he would take one of them at a time and do everything
in his power to end their career.

We no longer have the Media of Cronkite, Smith, Huntley, Brinkley,
etc. They existed when the News Media was News. Since they
changed to News is entertainment, the Media no longer has the
clout and Moral Authority earlier journalists had. Instead
of Rush being able to ruin the Media, the Journalists of that
era could have finished Rush. Entertainment Media fall into
same category as Rush but a rung higher.

This contributes to a diminishing Democracy.
