Normal people pay in chickens like our parents did.

6. My grandfather aka GrandDoc was a horse & buggy MD in the 1890s and later. I remembered his stories
about people paying their medical bills with baskets corn, catfish, and even several squirrels and their medical bill was paid in full.

Those stories were not told to get a laugh but to enforce the importance of recognizing when a person tries to pay her/his debts with the best they had.

A lesson that still echos in my mind all these decades later.

Sometimes it's not the actual value of the payment that matters but the intent.

16. William Carlos Williams was a writer and pediatrician
from that era. Lots of things in The Doctor Stories harken back to that era.

25. Thanks for the book title, it's on my read list. Williams and GrandDoc were from the same era and I
fear we have lost our understanding of others that made them such great humanitarians in their communities.

Again, thanks for the book title, it's on my gift list for children and grandchildren. :hi:

15. my husband just took a loan out of his 401k to pay the doctor and the hospital.
Since abby didn't have insurance, we applied for financial assistance and the hospital covered the whole $1500, but i had insurance so for the hospital i have a $200 copay and for the doctor we are looking at about $1000 for both abby and myself. and i had insurance. now, i look at the bills and see what the insurance company paid for and how much i am being charged to pay cash and wonder if i can't get the doctor to friggin give me a break! i am being charged $100 for a well baby check up for abby when the insurance is paying $50!

19. My true story:
When I moved to this small town 30 years ago, I serviced peoples cars at their house as needed. Oil Changes, exhaust, brakes whatever. I went to the local doctor and when he heard I worked on cars he asked if I'd take a look at his VW bus. I fixed his exhaust at a huge savings over the local dealer and he has been forever grateful. A couple of years ago, I went for a physical, which I do every 4 or 5 years and when I told him I was waiting for the health care reform to kick in before getting the blood sample tested as I really wasn't interested in spending the $350 the clinic charges. (I didn't mind his $70 bill for the usual questions and answers and ass probe). He gave me the paperwork so I could get the blood test whenever I got to it and I left. Well the Massachusetts healthcare reform came in. The policies start at about $800 mo. So of course I never signed up...I've got a high deductible major medical policy which is really cheap. I still have the paperwork, but never got the blood test. The Doc is used to working with those who can't or don't want to pay and thinks nothing of my situation. Should I take my tools to the blood lab and see if anyone needs a tuneup?

I think the chicken shit thing would work as well as anything the GOP has come up with over the years. That is; NOT WELL.

Sooner or later he gets paid by me, which is not always the case when he bills his patient's insurance companies.

That's the single most popular method of compensation in the health care "market". It narrowly edged out "Accompanying my physician to the Porsche dealership and letting his kid pick out her favorite color."
