No job for years and still looking
Edited on Fri Apr-23-10 12:45 PM by tonysam
Tell me about it:

John Miller wasn't too nervous when he lost his job in the mortgage industry in June 2008.

The worst of the financial crisis was still months away. While the subprime mortgage industry had already imploded, there was still a debate at the time whether a recession had started. Job losses were steady but not dramatic.

Miller lost his job when Deutsche Bank shut down a unit making government-guaranteed FHA loans, but he had found work in the past when an employer had closed a unit. He thought that even if it took a few months to find another job, something would turn up.

Almost two years later, he's still looking.

"It's unfathomable to me," said Miller. "Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd be coming up on two years without a job."

The dumb shit "recruiter" in the video blames the job seeker and not companies or the economy for the job seeker's plight. What an idiot she is. Her "advice" in blaming the job seeker for a shitty economy is worthless.

1. I know people who have been out of work since
2001. Work in animation and entertainment had been bleeding away for years, off shored to save money. But with 2D animation disappearing as Warners, then Dreamworks and finally even Disney giving up on the art form in favor of 3D animation they have lost their jobs permanently, struggling to get by on odd freelance jobs that provide no health care or benefits and are few and far between. Live action work has gone to Vancouver and New Zealand where tax incentives attract studios looking to save money and employees cost less because those countries have real health care. My brother worked as a set construction coordinator for over a decade, but in 2004 his work finally dried up to the point where he could no longer support his family. He moved back east where he makes custom furniture. It still isn't enough to support his family. So his wife has gone to work. They get their health care through her job as a teacher...yet another profession under attack.

I feel for those in the financial industry who lost their job. But where was their concern while every other industry was devastated due to the policies of wall street and globalization? He's one of the last to join the long line of people who have already been victimized by 30 years of Reaganomics.

2. There are people like myself who are willing to take anything out of their field,
but there are so many applicants for the most menial jobs it's almost a waste of time.

That "recruiter" in the video was so offensive and clueless. This "recession" isn't like any previous one--it's a depression.

4. It is a depression.
I think no one wants to believe that though. I hope you find work soon. A good job with benefits!

3. Very scary times
More graduates coming out of college and no jobs to be found.
They talk about a 'lost generation' of long term unemployed
who can't find jobs because they are long term unemployed.
I'm scared for my kids.

6. This is a great time
to go into business for yourself. I got laid off in 2006 and opened my own business and Ive seen revenue growth of 30% plus for each of the years since then. Sometimes we have to just realize that big business isn't the answer to getting us jobs and go out there and so it ourself.

8. Not everyone has the ability, or desire, to go into business for themselves.
I discovered long ago that self-employment was not for me. What is your solution for such people?

10. I have had a couple of small businesses.
But no customers.

If people don't have money to spend on your product, or don't want it, you could start a zillion small businesses and not make a cryin' dime.

I have a BA in biology and a Juris Doctor (law degree).
Neither of them has ever gotten me even the crappiest job. I'm overqualified and too old.

BFD. I said screw it, and retired!!

11. you just have to hang in there...and fight
I've pretty much given up looking for a 'straight' job, but I've found ways to survive, even amid cessation of unemployment benefits. I think it's gonna take 25 years of Democratic leadership to get us out of the mess that started with Raygun. We have to live and fight to make sure that happens! Living well indeed is the best revenge!

Tell me about i've been looking for work for a couple of months now and their is no one hiring here in Cleveland. (their never is any jobs in cleveland, the city is dying) And im in the IT field, a field that is suppose to be "recession" proof. And yet our government is still invested millions to Iraq (they have a surplus economy) and corporate bail outs instead of education and job growth. We don't need trickle down economics. We need trickle UP economics
