8. No kiddin. Arizona officially becomes a facist state. Maybe this will get out the Hispanic vote.
I am so ashamed, but the democrats did nothing to prevent this. If the AZ democratic party had done anything to support their local candidates in 2008, this could have been prevented, but all they cared about was narrowing the gap for Obama. This is tragic.

10. Arizona has clearly attempted to usurp jurisdiction which is exclusively a federal jurisdiction
The states cannot usurp federal power.

This is clearly an unconstitutional law.

14. Sorry everyone
I never voted for any of these clowns and have done what I can to prevent this from happening.

We're not all neanderthals here in Arizona. This is so embarrassing. :(

26. Since you are from AZ, do you think this was done to force immigration to be the next issue on
Edited on Fri Apr-23-10 05:10 PM by DeschutesRiver
the administration's agenda? I know that a ton of people wanted to see Obama roll up his sleeves in other areas now that HCR has a start; however, when I listened to your gov, I had the impression that she wanted the feds to get going on immigration reform now, and that she feels that this law is going to get the ball rolling. She referred to decades of inaction that lead your state to throw down this racial profiling gauntlet to the feds to force them to step up and do something. It seemed she was careful not to lay the blame at Obama's doorstep for this action, which made me wonder what was going on behind the scenes on this.

What she wants for immigration reform isn't probably what a lot of people seem to be looking for (just guessing from what little she said during the signing, as I don't know much about her), but maybe that is beside the point. I'd told dh the other day that AZ's law will ensure that immigration debate is the next in line, and had wondered if this was staged on purpose to cause that to happen.

I mean, that would be the non neanderthal explanation:) This law of yours has nothing to do with immigration. Just racial profiling codified.

Don't feel bad - I wouldn't hold this against AZ anymore than I hold Palin's existence against Alaska:)

Now, the birther legislation, that is some whacked out shit for which I can't come up with a single alternative more normal explanation. But I still won't hold it against you:) I'm from Oregon - we've done our share of stupid.

I don't know if there's any agenda in this legislation other than harassing Mexican immigrants.

31. I think I'll see if I can find a copy of this new law online
I'm an old retired lawyer, and it doesn't pass my gut sense sniff test, which is why I wondered if it was designed for a different purpose.

OTOH, this is such a hot button topic in your state that I'd need to see the wording to understand if they just thought they'd been clever enough in their wording to achieve what amounts to legal racial profiling. I'll see what I think after I've found and digested it.

16. Ariz. governor signs immigration enforcement bill (link)
Edited on Fri Apr-23-10 03:52 PM by cal04
http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2010/04/23/20100423arizona-immigration-law-passed.html

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer today signed into law an immigration bill that gives the state toughest law in the nation, making it a state crime to be in the country illegally and requiring local police to enforce federal immigration laws.

The new immigration law will require anyone whom police suspect of being in the country illegally to produce "an alien registration document," such as a green card, or other proof of citizenship such as a passport or Arizona driver's license.

It also makes it illegal to impede the flow of traffic by picking up day laborers for work. A day laborer who gets picked up for work, thus impeding traffic, would also be committing a criminal act.

The law goes into effect 90 days after the current legislative session ends, which is expected to be sometime in early May.

20. When Obama picked Napolitano for DHS Secy ...
I was afraid something like this would happen. People
were talking about what a whackjob Brewer was and how
she was going to take AZ WAY right ... and now it's come
true.

I'm sure Janet's doing a great job but ... I wish he'd
left her as AZ governor and maybe found someone else for
Homeland Sec.

also that Arizona wasn't important. And here we are. Awful. They also passed all the anti-choice legislation that Janet vetoed. I am sure Janet is upset today. She was at Obama's side as he addressed this issue.

25. "I'm sure Janet's doing a great job"
Didn't she issue a report on the growing right-wing potential for violence and then take it back because the motherfuckers complained?

28. Why did he HAVE to take Napolitano?!
This uneducated governor and legislature have ended full day Kindergarten which Napolitano worked so hard for. The cuts to education and social services in our state are devastating. Janet veto power was the only thing that helped us stop the right wing wackos in the legislature. :(
