Original message
Are we hypocrites?
We hear of someone like white supremacist Richard Barrett being murdered, and some of us rejoice. Say he had it coming. I admit I said he had it coming. I didn't rejoice though. I was saddened that a murder took place. He is scum. Scum of the earth. But we are the party for the people, right? All people. Even those we have strong disdain for.

When Michael Jackson died, some rejoiced (I get the whole child molestation situation). Ugly things were said about Steve Irwin when he died. When Ronald Reagan died, many rejoiced. Anna Nicole Smith... Well you get my drift. Sometimes I feel like we talk out of both sides of our mouths. I am not pointing anyone out by the way. I am guilty of this myself. Is it human nature, or are we so blinded by our politics that we don't care?

Remember even the grossest of people will be mourned when they are gone by their family. I have mourned the loss of a loved one. I am sure all of us have. I am not saying we shouldn't criticize people for their actions, but I have seen many many nasty statements made if they aren't "one of us".

What do you think?

6. Yep, I think it's hypocritical
But honestly can't understand the depth and vehemence of feelings on either side when someone you don't know dies. Everyone dies and in the grand scheme, not too much changes in the universe. Why the extreme passion over someone you've never met or spoken to goes?

Why would you add Anna Nicole Smith to that list by the way? What about Saddam Hussein? No mention of him, but Anna Nicole Smith is a certain dick? I don't get it at all.

I don't think we should be saddened by the deaths of people like Hitler, but rejoice? No.

If you celebrate the deaths of others, then you're no different than the people praying for Obama's death or the people who rejoiced when Wellstone's plane crashed. No different. It doesn't matter where you fall in the political spectrum.

Why was she so horrible to you that you were happy for her to die? And leave a brand new baby at that. Maybe she had drug problems, but she could've overcome them. Her child is now motherless. What is to rejoice about that?

Many people get addicted to drugs and booze, and they don't deserve to die because of it.

I am sad that you don't care about the kid. Just because you don't know her doesn't mean you shouldn't give a shit. She is an innocent being.

Totally based in the ego. Easy to understand why it's done, but that doesn't make it right.

Hypocrite may be the wrong word. Human...that's the right word. Humans are largely a selfish species, driven 99% by ego. Sadly, it's just who we are.

52. It's called empathy.
You have it. Others would call that enlightened thinking. Removing your self from the equation. Thinking about the whole picture and how one event is interconnected with so many other people and events. Thinking of another being at the same time you think of yourself. Too many people don't have that ability, as shown upthread.

Knowing you, it doesn't surprise me either.

56. Masters Of War
Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build all the bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks.

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly.

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain.

You fasten all the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion'
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud.

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins.

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
That even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do.

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul.

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand over your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead.

60. People on the right look at us (in these moments) and cry, "Hypocrites!"
Just as we do when they do it, too. It can be a sick game.

As someone else said, I'm not sure hypocrisy is what it is - it's an irrational, emotional response to something which appears to resolve a problem that creates frustration for us.

So it may be ugly, but it's understandable (if one wishes to understand).

65. Maybe the key is understanding.

71. I think so. And I know the thread you are talking about, but

I give everyone here the benefit of the doubt that they were just being spontaneous, and when you're among friends, you should be able to say things like that without such comments precipitating TOO much rancor, since clearly, the victim had done so many awful things, and the comments that were offensive would not have been made in almost any other circumstance.

Peace. :hi:

66. I don't claim any superiority
So it is without hypocrisy that I gladly admit to pissing on Reagan's grave for all eternity. :P

I think I'll write a poem about him.

69. How much good did the person do, how much bad did the person do

Hitler> would piss on the motherf*ckers grave if he had one. You talk about someone loved him, so I should feel sorry. What about the 25 million people that other people loved that he took away? The pain he caused, his f*cking death should be world holiday.

Micheal Jackson: didn't care

Nicole smith: didn't care

Richard Barrett: Heard he was an ass, didn't know about him, didn't care.

I don't know these people, and I don't pretend to know them. For me, there is a certain amount of respect due other human beings. But to feel bad for them? I need to know them. I need to know they were good people. I'm not going to find that out through a TV.

Did I feel sorry for her kid? A little, but not more then 5 seconds worth.

I can't solve all the world's problems. I can make my little area of the world better.

74. Here is my take on this.
I was not happy. I was sad. That a person could be so far off track in their thinking and loose their life for it. Some how some way that person lost something and in the end their life. Sad that our society breeds that type of person.

76. When evil people die, it's a good thing.
Don't get caught up in attributing a few people's behavior to the entire community.

Your use of "some" is not specific enough, and after reading the DU rules against call-outs, I can understand. But just because "some" do it, doesn't mean it reflects the behavior of the rest of the crowd.

77. It doesn't. I agree with that. But it is so rampant sometimes that
it stands out more than the decent comments.
