A time line for the descent into fascism over in Germany...
http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Holocaust/Chronology_1933.html

It's not an exact parallel to then and now, but is shows that strong baby steps were taken, much like those in Arizona, and quickly turned into goose stepping....

Well, I know many are uncomfortable about comparing what happened in Germany to what could occur in the US.

But if we can't learn from history, what's the point of it all?

I see an outrage and threats of boycotts and such but then it will all die down as it always does and soon another Southwestern state will take a stab at establishing a states right excuse for coming down hard on the Brown people.

Once the camel gets the nose under tent, well, we all know what that hoary old saying really means.

I think there is so much to be angry about that it is almost overwhelming. Who are we going to hate today, the bankers, the Bush minions, the big fat sheriff from Arizona (he doesn't deserve to be named), wall street, republican obstructionists, health insurance companies...

That list is long.

Many on the left smugly sit on their hands and laugh as Jon Stewart and Bill Maher take broad swipes at what is wrong with US while the beat does on.

La de da de de, la de da de da...

I hate to say it but they are all getting away with the equivalent of murder only instead of people it is the foundation of our country that they attack and we the citizens are too busy twittering to really give a shit...

1. You know what I say?
I say "FUCK everyone who takes comparisons to Germany/Nazis/Hitler off the table for whatever assinine reason they do so.

You are absolutely correct, if we can't learn from history, then what the fuck is the point?!?!?

Compare away, I'm 100% in support of it when the shoe fits.

I hate that every comparison has to include a disclaimer!

2. yeah....as if fascism somehow disappeared just because Hitler was no longer its central face.
It merely sought out the comforting folds of American corporatism and the easily primed and accessible folds of the Republican party.

4. the jewish people who swore "never again" have lost to those who lust after hitler's power
in the aftermath of the holocaust, many jews took up the cause of making sure it would never happen again. it was a noble mission and a worthy effort, but in doing so, they made it easy for the right-wing to SO demonize hitler as to make the concept of another seem like a fictional beast that could never exist in reality.

of course we would recognize the swastizka and the stiff-arm saluute and the armband and the gas ovens and the german accent and we would never tolerate that again. but the real message of those jews who worked so hard to prevent another hitler was that then NEXT hitler will not be so comically foolish as to adopt the identical trappings of the hitler of the 1930s and 1940s. the next hitler will seem as authentic and patriotic and sincere and charismatic to today's populus as hitler did to his.

demonizing hitler made people feel like it couldn't happen here because it was so implausible and therefore no vigilence was needed. in fact, this lack of vigilence is exactly what the next hitler needs.

8. A smile and a handshake and a wink...
I'm convinced that that is how the next Hitler will appear...

5. You've got it right.
We've been buried under a ton of things to worry over, or else we've been completely distracted from the real issues by these bozos.

It is a very scary moment...

Are there so few paying attention that it's too late?

10. huh? I don't see the baby steps at all in that timeline.
What happened in Germany really didn't happen gradually. It was quite swift indeed.

11. The stage was set through out the 20's....
A lot of feints and deft moves...

The last part was swift, the first part took the better part of a decade...

12. yeah, but you fail to take into account
the actual history- from the hyper-inflation to the effects of the aftermath of the war, and the absence of a democratic tradition.

13. Basically I wanted to show how events can quickly develop...
Our 9/11 ushered in a lot of the same draconian measures and saw a sea change in the political discourse in our country

But then again this is how I felt best to represent the rise of Fascism and raise an alarm that it could happen here. Whether or not it follows the same path as Germany or not.

If I took the time to lay out a college course about the fall of the Wiemar republic after the war which is what, as well as the unrealistic reparations that England and France insisted on after the war, truly laid the ground for Hitler's rise.
