Recession hit businesses hard; no federal taxes due in the last 2 years April 24, 2010

SPRINGFIELD -- Republican candidate for governor Bill Brady's once profitable business interests have taken a significant hit over the last three years -- so much so that he hasn't had to pay any federal income taxes for the last two years.
The Bloomington state senator's tax returns also show he did not pay state income taxes for his 2008 filing.
According to returns Brady made available briefly to reporters Friday afternoon, Brady's net income in 2008 was a loss of $116,679. Despite a lawmaker's salary of almost $75,000 and $162,208 in capital gains, Brady did not have to pay any income taxes for that year.
Brady reported an adjusted gross income of $119,910 for 2009, however, he did not have to pay federal taxes because of provisions in President Obama's stimulus package that aided small businesses, said Jason Brickman, Brady's lawyer and chairman of the Champaign County Republican Party. snip
Brady initially said he would not make his tax returns public because it would hurt his business interests. However, he had a change of heart after Gov. Quinn insinuated the lack of disclosure indicated Brady had something to hide.
But Brady only offered reporters a limited view of his tax returns. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, reporters shared copies of his returns and weren't allowed to make their own copies.
