19. She is likely receiving government assistance.
Most disabled people are, in some form or another, receiving federally funded assistance. The freepbagger mentality is that other people, all of them darker, should not get assistance.

10. She probably thinks 'health reform' is code for 'money going to mexicans, blacks and single moms'
Edited on Sat Apr-24-10 08:50 PM by Juche
You'd be surprised. Remember the woman with 10 kids on medicaid who was out protesting government healthcare for the poor? Or all the people on medicare protesting the public option?

As long as 'those people' (blacks, latinos, the poor, single moms, etc) aren't getting help I don't think the teabaggers mind 'that' much. But the welfare queen in her cadillac is probably what motivates a good deal of these people.

8. Pretty much
Government is meant to enact collective will of the people. A government military will always beat down a voluntary citizens militia. And social security will always be a better social safety net than private retirement accounts.

If you read the book 'nudge' they talk about how private solutions don't always work. They talk about how most people don't use private retirement accounts for example, but everyone uses social security.

11. You have a point, but in a world where our politicians spend that SSI money on other things
thats where the problem begins, and will not be ended because politicians wanna keep that money flowing.

12. They spend a fraction of it
Something like 1/7 is spent on the general budget. And that should stop, but social security is fine (raising the tax to 14% up from 12.4%, or raising the cap, or adding a year or two to retirement age will keep it solvent until the 22nd century). However anarchism and libertarianism don't really work. It sounds great in theory, but most people are busy and really don't pay attention. So expecting everyone to examine all their options in depth, then make a rational choice and stick with it doesn't work. Usually just having a good choice and more or less mandating it via elections works better.

Very few people can finance their retirements on personal savings. But almost everyone gets medicare & social security.

16. correct, but if we let this problem keep happening it will only continue to hurt us.
It needs to be fixed because we are losing money every second.

23. The fixes are minor
Raising the tax rate from 12.4% to 14.2% will keep SS solvent from 2042 up until about 2070.

You can also raise the cap (right now it is about 106k) either in full or in part. Or you can increase retirement age by a year or two. Or a combination. But social security is solvent and will be for a long time.

Medicare and medicaid are a different story, but that is why we are trying to reform health care.

18. That is bullshit. There is no 14 trillion liability.
And certainly 'politicians are spending it on other things' is just plain old rightwing freeper bullshit.

24. There is, and we do
There is about a 5-8 trillion deficit over the next 75 years, and about 14 trillion over 'eternity'. But its an easy fix. Just raise the tax rate a little bit (maybe from 12.4% to 13%) and lift the cap a bit.

And we do spend the surplus. We invest social security surpluses into the federal budget and spend it rather than save it. In fact there is some anger because Bush spent the social security surplus on tax cuts for the rich.
