Republicans push for Minnesota sovereignty
Republicans introduced a constitutional amendment Wednesday that would make Minnesota the first state to require a two-thirds majority vote in the legislature to approve federal laws affecting the state. “Minnesotans enjoy inherent, natural, God-given rights,” the bill states, and “Citizens of Minnesota are sovereign individuals, subject to Minnesota law and immune from any federal laws that exceed the federal government’s enumerated constitutional powers.”

~snip~

The bills are part of a larger conservative push, following the election of President Barack Obama, to give states power to reject federal policies. Seven red states passed Tenth Amendment resolutions following Obama’s inauguration: Alaska, Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Tennessee. Five others have passed a resolution since health care reform passed: Alabama, Kansas, South Carolina, Utah and Wyoming.

~snip~

Republicans in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District have gone even further: they recently passed a resolution calling for Minnesota to secede from union if the federal government exceeds its authority.

1. This is insane. What babies.
"If we don't win the presidential election and get everything our way, we're just going to secede from the rest of the country."

4. This is just posturing.
There is absolutely no chance of this amendment's success.

6. Yup, all seven of them.
And two of those live next door to me.

MN 5th CD - where Republicans barely bother to field a candidate.... cuz it's not worth spending any money when it's a sure bet you'll lose!

11. It's adorable, really.
I know they just *hate* all of the wonderful services we receive in the People's Republic of Minneapolis. Street sweeping, boulevard flowers, clean drinking water, bike trails, snow plowing, lake access, block parties etc. I bet it makes them sooooo angry. *pumps fist in air* :D

16. heh! Maybe there are more than seven of them
Not many more, however.

I just read Nick Coleman's column - the Republicans got 22% last time around in the 5th.

We've held that seat since 1963:

Don Fraser
Marty Sabo
Keith Ellison

woo hoo !

7. What is with the Rehtugs wanting ot start mini civil wars everywhere they go?
This was the South's response to Lincoln. I don't remember CT, RI or Mass etc. threatening to do crap like this when Bush was in power. All very Democratically controlled legislatures.

9. If they are going to invoke the word god
in any bill then I need to know what the name of their god is. There are many gods out there and without a name how is one to know if their god has my best interests in mind.

Equal parts nutty politics and pure scam artist bait

Are the Minnesota republicans going to abolish the Federal Reserve next? Repeal the 14th Amendment?

17. A war and an assassination just weren't enough to put paid to the primacy of states' rights, I see.
