LA extended parking meter times until 8pm. Now SF is requiring fees on Sunday----------------------------------------------------------
Sunday Parking Ripoff
The other day I saw the consummate San Francisco parking enforcement moment. A parking control officer was writing a ticket on a car at an expired meter while a tow truck hooked the car up and hoisted the front wheels.
Charging for Sunday parking is an idea that should be bagged.
The officer literally placed the ticket under the windshield wiper as the car was being towed out of the parking space.
So much for a warning.
The idea to charge parking fees on Sunday is another one of those steps that is bound to be justified by the deep thinkers in City Hall, but vilified by the average folks who sprint to their parking meter, only to find that they will owe $55 to $65 for being five minutes late. Assuming that the car is still there — because a tow can run to hundreds of dollars.
As city mull a 90-day trial that would charge for parking on Sunday's in selected neighborhoods, it's time to decide what we're really trying to accomplish here. Is the idea to make people think about public transit and freeing up parking places? Or is this a revenue stream?
Because it looks like the latter.
