HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The participation rate in southwest Kansas in the 2010 U.S. Census lags behind other parts of the state and the overall national response.
In Hamilton County, for example, on the Kansas-Colorado border, the participation rate stood at 51 percent Monday compared to the overall rate for Kansas that hit 75 percent Monday, according
More than 20 counties in the state's southwest corner showed a participation rate - based on mailed-in responses - below the state's 75 percent rate.
Hamilton County Clerk Marcia Ashmore said she mailed her survey in, and she could not explain why that county would have the lowest participation rate in Kansas. She observed, though, that 51 percent was higher than the last statistic she had heard for Hamilton County, of just 49 percent participation.
Historically, western Kansas, "for whatever reason," has been more difficult to survey than eastern Kansas, said Rich Gerdes, assistant regional Census Bureau manager in Kansas City, Mo.
