Because of his historic campaign. Obama brought alot of people back into the political/voting process from across the entire political spectrum. Many supported him, many(but fewer) didn't.
Young voters, college age, young workers, anti-war turned to Obama and gave him strong support.
But something that isn't talked about much anymore(if it ever was)..
The right wing of American politics mobilized against Obama like I've never seen them oppose ANYONE in my 39 years. They on the right also turned out to vote en mass in opposition. They still lost.
They mobilized behind the Right Wing's usual suspects. Hate, bigotry, fear, racism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia, and fundy religion were and still are their rallying banners. The cherry on top, paint Obama as a 'Socialist' and no right winger would stay home on Nov 4th, 2008.
The Repubs mobilized a strong voting army behind all that, AND STILL LOST! Changing demographics among the electorate is probably the reason. But, the GOP also chased away and/or turned off a lot of swing voters with their hatemongering and fear.
They've lost 2 election cycles in a row, nationally. '06 and '08.
They turned out in mass to oppose Obama, Pelosi, and Reid in '08. They turned out in '08 in contemptuous hatred of those 3 and STILL LOST. Not just tiny defeats, they were defeated handily. The right wing turned out en mass and still got their asses handed to them.
If hatred and fear can no longer win elections for the GOP, the GOP be fukt. KKKarl Rove was well known for repeatedly saying that the GOP would never lose the presidency again during the Bush years. Bush, Cheney, Rove, Rush, Fox News pushed that message of fear and division and arrogantly proclaimed that the GOP would never lose.
Obama, Pelosi, Reid mobilized the right wing all across America, and the GOP still lost handily. Only winning the reddest of red states.
The GOP's new hatred and fear - elections and democracy. They know, they fear it even if they won't admit it.
Through no fault of his own, Obama had a polarizing effect. The right wing turned out to oppose Obama with everything they had and still lost. The loss of control at the ballot box (err e-voting machine) has them in a state of some heads a-poppin'. They know they've lost control and the fear and hate are boiling over, as a result.
The GOP proved that arrogance is political suicide. RW/GOP/Teabag'ers are still 'hatin and fearin' themselves to the extreme outer fringes of the political spectrum. To me, it looks like the TB 'movement' is starting to fizzle out as their crowds get smaller and smaller. The wingnuttedness is driving people away from that ideology.
Perhaps the TB movement will never die out completely, but if they don't change their tactics they'll just be a shrinking fringe group of extremists.
Obama brought out the vote. Swing voters, moderates, young voters, progressives among others turned out en mass to vote for him. He was also a 'polarizing' figure to right wingers. 'Polarizing' because of the right wing's hatred and contempt for the man.
Obama voters beat them back.
The right wing turned out and gave it their best shot, and Obama voters beat them back.
We did it once, we'll do it again.
Why?
Because the Teabag/GOP/RW/KKK/BECKKK/RUSH/FUX/BONER/BACHNUTT's of the world are 'polarizing' and mobilizing all who have been turned off by everything the REICH WING stands for- Hate, Authoritarianism, and division.
I believe Democratic voters will turn out en mass in Nov '10.
If Dems turn out and vote, we should never lose an election. Voter apathy/low turn-out are they key reasons as to why Dems lose elections.
It's time for a wake up call on our side. It's time to start mobilizing and getting active. Time to start a get-out-the-vote campaign of our own and start it now.
Get out and vote on election day. AND BRING YOUR FRIENDS! Get them involved too.
Many states still have upcoming Dem primaries. Campaign season is here.
Volunteering for a Dem campaign is an awesome experience. It feels good to help candidates win. Dems will need our help during their campaigns as much as our support on election day.
Grassroots support is one of the most effective ways to help a Dem win. Door-knocking, phonebanks, emailing, hanging signs, donating directly to your favorite Dem candidates are how Dems win.
Please, pick a candidate or 2 and get involved with their campaigns by volunteering. It'll be a fun experience if you've never done it before. It feels good to help.
So let's please stop burying the Dem party here on DU and help them win in November by getting involved.
I don't fear November.
