down to the porch to sit for a while. We had all just picked up our mail. I was going on a bit about a haircut I just got (too short) and she sat down with us with a huff. I know not to get into it with her about anything political so waited while someone else asked her what was wrong... Lo and behold...She is "sick and tired of those damned republicans supporting Wall Street and the banks. If they're counting on winning anything this mid-term election they just lost it with their obstructionism this second day in a row." She had watched Senator Bunning on the MSNBC Ratigan show and he sent her "over the edge" as she put it.

Of course, all heads turned toward me as they know I spend waaaaay too much time on DU and other lefty sites, waiting for my response, if any. I don't feel bad for her but she was, at the very least,honest. I had to come upstairs anyway so as I got up I patted her on the hand and said "admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery." She actually laughed out loud and proceeded to tell us her very republican son was shocked, shocked I tell ya, that he received a far larger return on his income tax this year. He's wavering also according to her...LOL.

One by one, very slowly, they will come..

She may be inclined to listen and learn right now. You don't have to wallop her, but a few well-chosen facts that she can see for herself could go a long way toward making her change of heart a permanent rather than a temporary thing. The chances are very good that on quite a number of issues, Democrats are pursuing an agenda much more in line with her interests than anything the Republicans are doing.

Where I live in NW Ohio, Republicans can do no wrong. You would think that after living through Bush/Cheney fucking things up on a national and international level and Bob Taft fucking things up at the state level, these people would at least take a step back and tone it down. Sometimes when I'm too frustrated by idiots who refuse to see the truth, I remind myself that there were some people back at the end of WWII, standing in the rubble, waving Nazi flags as the Allies came through.

So... there are always some lost causes. Best to let them be and focus on what's the next right thing to do. (Easier said than done, I know.... I'm one of the worst when it comes to patient forbearance with idiots. I'm hoping my own good advice will sink in someday :P )

And as with "Health Care Reform," favorable to us is a hell of a lot more that giving us over to corporations by force of law with only suggestions of control in return. I am not any happier by our War Machine being given over half the budget by Democrats than I would be by Republicans.

Neither Party has the vision to address our core problems, and returning proven bad performers to office is our affirmation of their bad leadership.

A lot of the rightward movement of the Democrats has been due to the ascendancy of the Republicans. The R's seemed unstoppable so the D's moved right. As the R's explode, that will make it easier to move the D's left, since "going right" becomes an obvious failure.

If history is any guide, the D's will not contain the entire political spectrum. Either two things will happen:

1) The D's remain relatively 'left', and a new right party, or reformed Republican party, takes over the right.
2) The D's take over the right, and a new party forms on the left. Much like the original formation of the Republican party after the self-destruction of the Whigs.

Either way, there will be a major 'left' party. And frankly, I don't care what it's called.

Disarray on the right only helps the situation, as they'll fail to 'get their message out', leaving the people on the left as the only ones 'getting their message out'.
