Time names Beck one of 100 most influential people, commissions Palin to write article praising him

TIME has named Glenn Beck one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

And they commissioned another member of their TIME 100, Sarah Palin, to write the article praising Beck.

"Who'd have thought a history buff with a quirky sense of humor and a chalkboard could make for such riveting television?" Palin wrote of Beck, who she compared to the high school government teacher so many wish they'd had, charting and connecting ideas with chalk-dusted fingers -- kicking it old school -- instead of becoming just another talking-heads show host."

Palin described Beck as "America's professor of common sense" and says that "he's doing to progressive what Ronald Reagan did to liberal -- explaining that it's a damaged brand."

"Best of all, Glenn delights in driving the self-proclaimed powers-that-be crazy," Palin wrote. "Though he sometimes dismisses himself as an aw-shucks guy or just a 'rodeo clown,' he's really an inspiring patriot who was once at the bottom but now makes a much needed difference from the very, very top."

In August, Palin urged her Facebook fans to watch Beck's show; when she joined Fox News, she appeared on his show, where the pair offered to host "Saturday Night Live" together.

6. Say what you will about these two pathetic excuses
but don't blame Time for running them as two of the top 100 most influential...because THEY ARE.

For better or worse (mostly worse), it's very much true. For every few sane and rational people I run into who can't stand them, I run into one who thinks they are just fantastic.

And the ones that like them will defend them TO THE DEATH. It's a very cult-like vibe, and both of them share it. Palin, I *sort of* get (she was exciting, she invigorated Republicans after the Bush horrors and the banality of McCain, she was nasty towards people they like to hate (President Obama in particular, but also V.P. Biden, Democrats in General, and of course the media), she had and still has star power somehow), but Beck, I'm baffled.

BUT, he is hugely influential. Time Magazine is merely the messenger, don't shoot them. ;)

7. Understood, but...
...for Time to give Palin a platform in which she names Beck as "America's professor of common sense," and for thst statement to go unchallenged, is the part that makes my head spin.

And unfortunately, we don't have a "voice" that's as loud or as influential to challenge them, because the people we listen to shy away from sideshow antics and over-the-top demeanor, except in small, carefully measured doses.

11. The *only* reason those two appear to have influence is because the media
props them up.

8. Why in the world would she have anything good to say about him?
I thought she hated sexist tv personalities who say bad things about her?

http://thinkprogress.org/2009/11/26/beck-palin-kitchen/

Or is that only the ones she claims are sexist because they make her look like the idiot she is?

9. Glenn Beck is Influential
to dumb asses.
I love that Palin said: he's a guy that everyone wants to be their HS Gov teacher...WRONG!
I was lucky to have a HS Gov teacher who wasn't uber-partisan and who was actually a pro-gay marriage, pro-choice republican.
Glenn Beck is just a neo-con in libertarian clothing.

10. I believe it. Half the people here at DU are pinned to his every word.
In fact I think he's more influential with the people who hate him than with the people who like him.

12. Saturday Night Live
I will be waiting for this episode!! It will probably be the most hilarious one yet, and the funniest part... Palin and Beck won't have a clue what's so funny.

13. They mean 'commissioned Palin to commission a writer to write the article'
Because
(a) we can be sure Palin would demand far more money than Time could afford to actually do anything like 'write'
(b) her own writing would be a hopelessly illiterate mess that Time would have to rewrite from scratch.

In fact, given Palin's disinclination to any form of work, I suspect Time had to say "we'll find a writer to imitate you, put your name on it, and give you a few thousand dollars for your time reading this email".
