I've decided to BOYCOTT Oklahoma
It's amazing to me how no one suggested boycotting Oklahoma due to their draconian misogynist laws.

Remember this?
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/08/oklahoma-abortion-law-det_n_313779.html

And how about this?
http://mydd.com/2010/4/27/a-war-on-women-in-oklahonm

So as a result, I have decided to go ahead and boycott Oklahoma. Here are some of the companies I found:

Marshall Brewing Company
The Hertz Corporation
Jasco Products Company (computer accessories)
National Car Rental
Xcaliber International
Phillips Petroleum Company
Big Daddy's BBQ Sauce
American Fidelity Assurance
Braum's Ice Cream and Dairy Stores
Feed The Children
Taco Mayo

If you can think of others and are interested in this boycott, let me know.

1. From what I see, the boycott talk is having a powerful effect.
So what is your beef?

Brilliantly ironic post, Nikki. VERY well done!

AZ, FL, and TX.

7. You really SHOULD boycott "Feed The Children"
Edited on Thu Apr-29-10 10:08 AM by Lyric
The organization is deeply scandal-ridden. They've been in more trouble than I can even list here, and the guy in charge is a right-wing lunatic. Your money is better spent on charities that AREN'T being run by slick shuckster frauds.

http://www.news9.com/Global/story.asp?S=11746503

Edit: Oh, and Nikki? At first I thought you were another peeved Arizonan who's mad because your state is getting targeted, and my initial post here was snarky. Then I realized what your angle is, and I decided to edit. You're being serious, and I agree with you. We SHOULD boycott states like Oklahoma. The laws they just passed have reduced women to having fewer rights than CHILDREN in terms of their healthcare. When your doctor is free to legally lie to you and tell you that your brainless, hydrocephalic fetus is "perfectly normal" in order to prevent you from choosing an abortion, and you have no legal recourse at ALL against him or her, then you have fewer rights than a child. At least when doctors lie to children (or lie by omission), they have to tell their PARENTS the truth.

9. I agree - and Nikki, I also want to clarify my earlier post
in that I agree with your anger and your sentiment.

It is ironic, however, that while DU has been coming unhinged over AZ, the passage of laws in OK that are just as stupid and unconstitutional has hardly been a blip on the radar.

27. Hate to burst your bubble
Signing up for this one because I have lived in Oklahoma for so long.

The guy you're talking about is not a "right wing lunatic". He used to piss off the Bushies. Before that he pissed off the Clintonites. Before that he pissed off the senior Bushies. His line has always been that the government isn't doing ENOUGH.

He's also no longer "in charge". The board spent the last few years documenting all the crap he did and getting rid of him. The only thing he has been doing lately is filing insane lawsuits against the charity trying to get his job back. ALL the stuff those articles talk about has been addressed, fixed or is in the process of being fixed.

ASIDE from that I don't think I understand what kind of person would urge people to boycott a global CHARITY just because its headquarters are in a state you're mad at. The OP didn't say boycott this charity because of scandal. They want to boycott it because it's in Oklahoma. Can someone make sense of targetting a hunger relief charity that does a ton of work around the nation as a protest for legislation that harms women? Kick hungry kids because you're mad about a bad law for women? It's not like that charity is a big employer. It doesn't lobby. It doesn't preach. It doesn't produce a product. Most of the "money" it takes in is really donated product that it turns around and delivers to food banks around the country. It delivers food to churches of all religions and to all kinds of secular organizations. So what is the value in boycotting it?

28. There are other charities that do the same work.
I feel NO guilt about urging people to donate to a charity that DOESN'T have a history of fraud and scandal. "Feed the Children" and that god-awful "Angel Food Ministries" are two of a kind in my book. Sure, they provide some help--but there are strings and fraud and there are ALTERNATIVE groups that can do the SAME job with less waste and less risk. So let me say it again--I fully support donating to UPSTANDING charities, regardless of the state they're in.

29. Not really
the original poster didn't say anything about fraud or scandal they just said to boycott them because they are in Oklahoma. And I don't know how much non profit experience you have but a billion dollars in donated product every year isn't something that just gets replaced by some other charity doing the "same" kind of work. They distribute all of that because there is a need other charities doing the same work aren't able to meet. It's not like there's another billion dollars in goods sitting around unused because feed the children took care of everything. The charity isn't run by the guy who was involved in all of the fraud and scandal any more and he was removed by a board that instituted industry standards for accounting and operation and governance. I can understand urging people not to donate to this charity in the past but it seems misguided to come along AFTER they have completely reorganized PRECISELY to get rid of that guy and to stop doing business the way he did and THEN urge people not to donate.

30. You totally missed the point of the OP
Nobody freaks about sexism here the way they do about racism. If women were a different color from men, we might warrant the kind of response that has been happening in AZ. Comprende?

11. As one who grew up in Oklahoma
it now doesn't surprise me that I chose to go into the military but, since the 70's, Oklahoma has taken a turn to extreme conservatism from even back then.,,,

Is it surprising that the infamous Haliburton got its start in OK...that may not affect your list but just thought I'd mention it...

So many companies have gone multi-national that it's hard to target those that are state-centric. And given the ignorance/isolationism in the country and also Oklahoma, the locals probably have no idea what their businesses are doing. Furthermore, the businesses probably operate there because regulation is so lax. Look at Utah, for example. There you have all of the pyramid management styles of business - Amway is an example - do some digging and you will find those types of businesses (sponsoring those wonder-foods like Tahitian noni berry and Acai and their ilk) have minions working at the bottom of the pyramid. They work, invest, and acquire more disciples for their own businesses....Yet all of the money goes to top leadership.

Contrast these schemes to the other end of the spectrum of state businesses that are more fair - those in Vermont.

15. Thanks for the list, Nikki

Imagine if, as another DUer suggested, men in OK were now required to have prostate exams before they could get Viagra? Imagine if MALES were targeted by a "forced rape" clause by some Theocratic, backwoods legislation?

Suppose they decided, in their Fundy-addled brains, to start doing anal probes on men to check for evidence of homosexuality? After all, teh gay is as evil to these cretins as abortion.

You can be damned sure men would be raising holy hell.

But any man who has a sister, mother, wife, daughter, grandaughter, should be as outraged as any woman over this "forced rape" in the OK law.

I am so pissed off there is no word to describe how I feel toward those mysoginist Repuke sons of bitches.

Somebody in OK need to stalk these legislators and expose all their dirty secrets. But boycotts are fine by me, too.

17. This shit just pisses me off so badly

as a 50 something woman i know how hard women worked to get free from men using our bodies as their "moral statement." Use your own goddamned bodies for a "moral statement" and stay the fuck out of mine!

it seems many younger men and women just don't seem to get it, or take it for granted that our rights will always be there. But these rights have to be vigilantly guarded against the "Moral Elite" who do whatever the fuck they want on their own time, Family Fucking Values be damned.

I will guarantee every one of those misogynists (spelled it right that time, maybe) is a goddamned pervert.

:kick: Kicking again for all our daughters, mothers, sisters...

18. I totally support you and have already called for such action
We must use our waning power over the system and that is the few dollars, change, and pressure we can bring to bear if we combine our might.

The "actual" abortion bill is beyond the pale and pretty damn dark ages but I would think in something resembling a sane country that we would never declare that a pregnant woman has no right to expect accurate information from her doctor because she is pregnant.

THIS IS SUPPOSE TO BE A FREE NATION POPULATED BY A FREE PEOPLE.

STOP THINKING LIKE PROPERTY! STOP ALLOWING YOUR FELLOW PERSON TO TREATED AS A SUB-CLASS!!!!

24. My state is an embarrassment.
Last night the local news was reporting on the successful override of the abortion bill. The very next story was how an Oklahoma Congressman, one who supported the abortion bill no doubt, wanted to not only mirror AZ's new law, but also go a step further and attempt to strip citizenship from babies born to illegal immigrants...the 14th Amendment notwithstanding.

This state has become a bastion of backwards and conservative groupthink. I would love to move away from here but that's just not possible at this time.
