Tears streaming down his cheeks, grief overcame Barack Obama today as he attended the funeral of the woman he called the 'Godmother' of the American civil rights movement.

The U.S. president was weeping openly as he watched the service for Dorothy Height in Washington today.

He delivered the eulogy for Dr Height, whose activisim stretched from the New Deal right up until Mr Obama's election as the first African American president of the United States.

91. What a beautiful display that this man is a real human being with a good heart...
I am so glad and feel so fortunate to have a man of his qualities, talents, intelligence and compassion as our president. We should all feel extremely fortunate to have him as our leader. Barack Obama is uniquely qualified to lead us through one of the most difficult times in American history.

That is a very moving photograph of a man who has genuine love and compassion for others.

49. Yes, I was disappointed to see that
I posted notices on two DU forums the day she died but there wasn't much of a response. I could only assume that people were unaware of the greatness that was Dorothy Height. I just hope people the same folks who are lauding the Prez for his tears at her funeral remember that it was Mrs. Height whose remarkable life we should be celebrating and her passing we should mourn. I had been waiting for the Virginia Governor to say something or to order the state flags to be flown at half-staff (Height was a native of Richmond) but he was probably too busy celebrating some Confederate holiday.

Many great people like Dorothy were left out of the history books. Our children are missing so much of history because of the politicization of history.

I had always seen her pictures in many of the MLK pictures but I never really understood her importance.

59. And too often, the contributions of women are omitted from the story
I wonder just how many here were aware of Dorothy Height before the public funeral service. I actually find it rather sad to see a thread getting so many comments and 95 recommendations because the President was crying at her funeral service, but notices of Mrs. Height's actual death passed off these discussion forums with barely a comment. I guess if Obama hadn't cried virtually no one would have mentioned her passing.

It is ambiguous as written but I doubt that she meant it in the negative way toward the President.

41. Isn't it, though?
President Obama really has a common touch. Did you see the memorial for the Massey miners? That was one of the most moving memorials I've seen since the one honoring the Challenger astronauts. After the service, our president escorted from the church a woman who lost a son and two grandsons in the blast. He held her close, their foreheads touching as he comforted her. I cried.

About Ms. Height: This weekend we watched a 2003 (I think?) C-SPAN interview w/Ms. Height. Age hadn't dimmed her memories; she was sharp as a tack. I especially liked the part during which she talked about her friendship with Eleanor Roosevelt. Ms. Height didn't just tell the story; she put you in the room with them.

She was quite a woman. We were lucky to have had her as long as we did. Rest in peace, Ms. Height. And thank you.

92. Remember Bush crawling on the Oval Office floor joking about finding WMDs?
While Bush was joking about not finding any WMDs our soldiers were dying in Iraq. But there was no outcry against Bush, except from those in the far left. That video of Bush making fun should have been on every newscast, but it wasn't. Compare Bush's total lack of concern for the soldiers he sent to be murdered to that picture of Obama displaying to the world that he has a heart. Bush doesn't. I firmly believe Bush is a sociopath.

53. Very touching photo. Dorothy Height will always be a treasure in my heart.
This photo really hit me. She was a giant when our nation was filled with very small people.

61. We have a Presinent with a heart. Love it.
Any Reich-Winger that says that it's "unmanly for a President to cry" is a gutless coward. Real Men Cry. Real men show compassion.

72. Very moving for a powerful man to openly display such emotion!
I have no doubt the emotion displayed by the President is real and genuine. It's good that Obama feels secure enough to show emotion instead of always have to be the tough American president. I like that, and I like the example he sets for others.

The loss of Dorothy Height was undoubtedly a very hard thing for him, but I would consider that he's probably shedding tears not only because of her death, but because of the current movement by the Tea Baggers, etc. AWAY from the very ideals that Ms. Height revered and fought for all of us to have. Equality and justice.

This country is going backwards (you have only to look to Arizona!!!), and that is enough to sadden anyone.

75. I don't recall * ever shedding one tear for all the death and destruction he caused.
Not once.

I love my President! He is a true human being. Nice to have one after the 8 years of *. I almost forgot what it was like to have a President.

At a Medal of Honor ceremony for a soldier in Iraq who threw himself on a grenade. There's photos of it out there.

82. I will concur with that wonderful sentiment!
He has not done everything I would have done in his shoes, but they are his shoes, and he is the one who takes the steps and I wish him nothing but success and a path to be shown to him furthermore to rectify the wrongs in this country. I continue to pray for his safety, and his heart to be noble and to ignore the hatred from the far right that is seeping out everywhere we turn.

He is a good man...

83. I'd cry if I was him, too.
There's never been anyone who has taken on such an enormous fuck-up than this man. He's one amazing human being.

I may not always agree with his politics, but we're lucky as hell to have him at the top right now.

94. Funerals are emotional and people think of ALL the people they have lost....
and President Obama has a big list of people that he has lost in his life
his mother
his father
his grandmother
his grandfather
Teddy Kennedy
and all the soldiers that have died in Iraq and Afghanistan and Ft. Hood
and the 29 miners he gave the eulogy for the other day
I'm sure there are even more...

Although, I must confess, I'm a closet "Michelle Obama" for President supporter. I know she would never run...and if she did probably would never win. To me, she just seems so....straight forward.

And it is interesting that this article is from the UK.
