Arizona boycott list posted on FB:
In the wake of the recent adoption into law of SB1070 by the State of Arizona today (04.23.2010), one of the most draconian anti-immigration laws ever in the United States, many people have called for a boycott of the State of Arizona.

It would be helpful to also target the political contributors to Arizona State Senator Russell Pearce and Governor Jan Brewer.

Encourage your local municipalities to take action. Ask your elected officials to follow the lead of the City of San Francisco in halting their business partnerships with the State of Arizona. According to SF Supervisor David Campos, "We encourage other cities to join San Francisco. Together we can work to restore justice in our nation."

1. San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, Austin, and New York City are all
in varying stages of getting to an AZ boycott.

Keep putting the external pressure on the Jim Crow state.

5. Did these companies back the bill? why boycott them? Serious question
Are they trying to encourage people at those companies to raise hell with the legislators? That seems a good idea. I don't see what boycotting a company that doesn't support it would do though, simply because they live in a state.

9. The diamond backs, yep, they are married to the GOP
the problem with this is that a boycott is a blunt instrument, but it does tend to work.

But as a blunt instrument it hurts a lot of people.

Me... well joining this... mostly I know that if this is not shown to hurt the power elite... well soon I will have to decide whether to stay in this version of spring time for Hitler and fight or just plain out get the fuck out.

18. No. how does boycotting a company help legislation?
I can see writing them, emailing calling them asking them to please protest to their representatives, but don't see why boycotting them would help anything. Unless they are, as some are, supportive of this law. In which case, get them.

14. Since Arizonans are apparently unable to elect even semi-responsible legislators...
It appears to be up to the rest of the country to put pressure on Arizona from outside.

I'm very sorry the AZ electorate is so shitty. You may wish to take that up with the vast majority of white Arizonans who support the law.

21. I have to take issue with that. The Mayor in Phoenix is a Dem - as was the elected Governor.
The state legislator picked up many Dem seats over the last 2 elections. Obama was within 10 points of McCain in McCain's HOME STATE.
IF Janet Napolitano was still our governor, this shitty bill would have been vetoed.

12. Uh oh! Two major bowl games in AZ this year, both the Fiesta bowl and the BCS championship game!
Edited on Thu Apr-29-10 09:26 PM by cascadiance
I wonder how we can boycott those and at the same time not feel screwed if our team gets selected by them.

I'm already planning on not going to the Iowa/Arizona game in Tucson this year earlier. But I'd be pretty PO'd if this were the one year they went to the BCS championship or the Fiesta Bowl and having to make that choice!

Here's a poll asking whether they should move the title game! DU it up! It needs help!

17. Don't punish us all
I am an Arizona resident. I am also a liberal democrat. We must get this law repealed, but boycotting companies that had nothing to do with this will only cost a lot of innocent people their jobs.

20. It won't work =(
I tried to bring calm last Friday when this all broke open, and tried to tell people not to boycott.
Everyone is out for blood and someone must be punished, according to the masses. It doesn't matter that the only people that they are going to hurt with this boycott are the people they are supposedly trying to help. You know, the working class people. Not the law makers or politicians.

24. If it makes you feel any better - Dallas is going to have a protest on Saturday called "We are
all Arizona". I was beginning to wonder if anyone out there got it that this law hurts us all, not just Az.

One thing that keeps me going is that I have a feeling the Democrats in Az are motivated to get out the vote this fall. We must get Goddard elected.

19. Gawker's similar, but light hearted, list:

Your Guide to the Arizona Boycott: Porn, Sky Mall, and P.F. Chang's

So you want to protest Arizona's stupid new immigration law by boycotting the state, like San Francisco did. Okay. Can you live without Sky Mall, P.F. Chang's, domain-name registration and internet pornography?

Arizona, the refried-bean swastika state, has made it legal for the police to detain anyone on suspicion of being Mexican. This is a remarkably stupid and harmful law, even for the state that gave us Barry Goldwater, and in response, some people are recommending a boycott of Arizona.

That doesn't sound too bad! We have effectively been boycotting Arizona for years by not thinking about it, or going to it, ever, so this should be pretty easy. And you're aided by the fact that most Arizona businesses suck. Even so, you should cross-check our list to ensure you are fully compliant (all info courtesy the never-wrong internet scholarly location "Wikipedia"):

Business: P.F. Chang's China Bistro
Category: Crappy Chinese food
Based out of: Scottsdale
Suggested replacement: A real Chinese restaurant, for Christ's sake.

Business: Sky Mall
Category: Sales, category: Shit you didn't realize you needed till you had that second vodka and cranberry 30,000 feet above sea level.
Based out of: Phoenix
Suggested replacement: Going to the Brookstone store in the mall to sit in the massage chairs till you get kicked out.

Business: Go Daddy
Category: Bizarrely sleazy domain-name registration
Based out of: Scottsdale
Suggested replacement: Ask yourself, "Do I need a domain name?" The answer is "no."

Business: John McCain
Category: Old people/Senators
Based out of: Phoenix/Washington, D.C.
Suggested replacement: Vermont Socialist Bernie Sanders.

Business: Alcor Life Extension Foundation
Category: Cryonics, the science of freezing gullible dead people
Based out of: Scottsdale
Suggested replacement: Freezer in your garage.

Business: The Arizona Diamondbacks
Category: Baseball teams
Based out of: Phoenix
Suggested replacement: The New York Yankees.

Business: ClubJenna, Inc.
Category: Branded internet pornography
Based out of: Glendale
Suggested replacement: Perfume ads in Vanity Fair.

Business: The Grand Canyon
Category: Canyons
Based out of: The Grand Canyon
Suggested replacement: LEGOLAND® California.
