NorCal Bird Rescue Group Activated For Oil Spill
(CBS13) - A Northern California bird rescue group is headed to Louisiana as a massive oil spill heads to the coastline, threatening hundreds of species of fish, birds and other wildlife.
The International Bird Rescue Research Center (IBRRC) says on their website that they have been activated and are sending a four person team to the Gulf.
The four person team includes IBRRC Executive Director Jay Holcomb as well as a veterinarian, rehabilitation manager, and capture specialist.
"This is a real team effort between all groups involved," says Holcomb. "While International Bird Rescue has a great deal of experience at managing large-scale oiled wildlife rescue efforts, our primary role here will be to support local groups and to work together to make sure we do everything we can to minimize the impact on local wildlife."
Holcomb says the damage could be significant, particularly to brown and white pelicans, terns, gulls, shorebirds, skimmers and herons. Nesting and feeding areas for birds and sea turtles such as marshes and beaches could be impacted.
