Why did they cement this well ??
If it was producing large amounts of oil, then why cement it closed? They do this all the time, we are told. Why? Is it only for production reasons? Is it to control the quantity of oil on the market at any one time? Can they go back and open these cemented wells at any time? Any experts here?

1. Because that's how you hold the casing to the sidewalls of the wellbore.
It's done the same with water wells. Did you just think they had an open hole in the ground? That'd cave in, which would be a big problem.

2. So they don't put the cement into the pipeline itself?
I'm just asking. I don't know.

4. They put it into the pipeline,

then push it down to the end, so that it comes all the way to the bottom of the hole and comes back out on the outside of the pipe to fix it in place.

If the well is going to go into production right away, the push the cement with drilling mud (which does not solidify). If they are going to wait and produce later, they cement the inside of the pipe as well. Cement is very soft and can be re-drilled later very fast, with a smaller drilling rig.

3. I'd like to be enlightened about this
I'm having a hard time imagining what's going on at the bottom. How would a dome work? What is a plug? If you know maybe you could even start a thread to let us get a better idea of what's going on.

5. Your post made me wonder what the process was and I found this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casing_(borehole)

It gives an explanation of why and how this procedure is used. Hope this helps.
