Marine Week Boston kicks off this morning when a helicopter the size of a house hovers at tree top level over Boston Common, then slowly touches down near the Frog Pond, blasting any spectators near enough with heavy rotor wash put out by its enormous blades.
Landing an MV-22 Osprey in the rarefied air of Beacon Hill is not a subtle way to say hello to Boston.
“Not meant to be,” said Maj. Yanni Athanasiadis. “They are absolutely amazing pieces of equipment. The one that’s coming here is flying from New River (N.C.) on one tank of gas. It takes them a couple of hours to get here. They can cruise at 15,000 feet. It’s going to be a great thing to see.”
The Marine Corps is pulling out all the stops this week. The same aircraft, or a CH-53E Sea Stallion of similar size, is scheduled to land at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well as high schools in Salem, Beverly and Lynn.
