Rick Perry warns against 'knee-jerk' reaction to gulf oil spill

12:53 AM CDT on Tuesday, May 4, 2010

By DAVE MICHAELS / The Dallas Morning News

WASHINGTON – Texas Gov. Rick Perry warned Monday against a "knee-jerk" reaction to the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, saying it is too early to assign blame for the disaster.

Speaking at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Perry said policymakers should resist the urge to close offshore areas to drilling because of the accident that killed 11 workers, sank a deep-sea rig and has poured tens of thousands of gallons of crude oil into the gulf.

"I hope we don't see a knee-jerk reaction in this country to shut down drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, because the cost to this country will be staggering," he said.

Perry said he thought BP, which leased the rig that was drilling the well, was "doing everything humanly possible" to contain the spill. He declined to grade the Obama administration's response to the disaster, but he said officials had done a good job of sharing information with governors.

"From time to time, there are going to be things that occur that are acts of God that cannot be prevented," Perry said. "So until we know that, to make a judgment on this administration or any further activity may be a bit premature." http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/nation/stories/050410dntexperryoi.44853a8.html

I would pay someone good money to punch this fool out cold. Please, someone?

7. An "Act of God" in legal and insurance terms is a natural disaster, meaning
nature alone caused it. Examples would be a hurricane, extreme weather, a flood, a tornado/cyclone, a meteor, etc.

Acts of God are used to exculpate would-be defendants in tort or environmental actions.

11. Even so, BP's total maximum liability is only $75M, anyway
That's assuming a court ever obtains a judgement against BP in the first place.

19. Did they pay any taxes last year? Probably not. Exxon didn't.
If that's the case, they probably still have the $75M lying around in petty cash.

22. Exactly. Which made me want to post this article. "Act of God" is codewords for
letting big corporation f*ck ups like BP off the hook. Act of God my ass. This was deliberately mismanaged by Halliburton (it was their cement job)and BP.

9. No Rick, it wasn't an act of God
Unless of course one considers cheney as God. My view is that cheney is somewhat beneath God, so to speak.
An act of God is a tornado, the flooding in the South and in Iowa a couple of years ago, a lightning strike, or something along those lines. It is not an "act of God" when an oil rig explodes and lets loose millions gallons of crude oil. That is a manmade disaster. And here's the thing Rick, I'm just a simple man sitting at his computer and even I know that much.

12. Perry is a bigger Big Oil Shill then Cheney
The cause will be found to be (directly or indirectly) related to the absence of the emergency shut off valve at the well head.

I wish the GOP wouldn't so blatantly shill for Big Whoever.

23. I can't think of anything more opposite "act of God" than an oil well blowout
It's a 100% human-caused action. That's like poking a hornets' nest and calling the resulting swarm "an act of God"

33. Google Buffalo Creek - another man-made disaster blamed on God.
I know most here on the board understand the cynicism of the so-called religious right...but it never ceases to gall me when the Corporate party and their mouthpieces will use an "act of God" to cover for companies who cut corners to reduce costs and increase profits. An "act of God" is an earthquake or hurricane, an "act of man" is Buffalo Creek or this disaster in the Gulf.

If there is a God, I hope Perry and his ilk will be held accountable for why they blamed God for the criminal acts of man. I would sure like to have a front row seat for that Q&A.
