The public may support this bill now, but in the long run it's political suicide for the Republicans.

They're cutting ties with an electorate that they've been able to make inroads with. The establishment Republicans are letting the inmates (tea baggers) run the prison. Excluding people from your party is never a good idea, especially when you're talking about an electorate that's becoming more and more diverse.
