Mom Won't Return Racy Books To Library-"Teens Should Not Have Access To Material"
Mom Won't Return Racy Books To Library
Tina Harden Says Other Teens Should Not Have Access To Material

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A Central Florida mother is refusing to return several library books her daughter checked out 2 years ago, saying they contain inappropriate sex and drug references.

Tina Harden has incurred $85 in fines ignoring calls from the Seminole County Library and bill collectors.

The books are about fictional teen "Jenny Humphrey," from the best-selling "Gossip Girl" series and spinoff "It Girl" series by Cecily von Ziegesar. "Gossip Girl" is now a popular TV show on the CW.

Harden said other teens shouldn't have access, though the library has other copies. She says she'd check out those, too, if her membership hadn't been revoked.

1. I think I'll back a truck up to the Gideons and demand their bibles...
since we can now personally dictate what we approve of.

2. Hey Ms. Harden - there's a legal term for what you're doing.
It's called theft. But I'm sure you'd much rather your daughter be taught by your actions to be a thief than to read a book.

If she privately bans enough books, maybe the Devil will just go away!

4. I wonder how many copies of the Bible she has.
Premarital and extramarital sex, rape, murder, genocide, and a wide assortment of other mayhem.

7. Funny how the bible thumpers always seem to ignore just how much be getting in
the bible as well as all of the violence, yet they are worried about sex and violence in other books. It kind of reminds me of a girls mother back in the 70's, she bought her daughter the Happy Hooker book, yet threw a fit when the girls friend gave her a book that had gay sex acts in it, lol.

17. Most Bible thumpers are biblically illiterate. They know some of the Bible, especially the
"good" parts their ministers want them to know. They don't know about the genocides, incest, murder, etc.

I don't see any difference morally.

... for being insipid literature. That should be a crime. Alas, I failed in my election bid for Enforcer of Moral Code.

16. my local library will have another copy from another area
public library sent if I put a request/hold on a book, via the internet even, that went "missing" from my library. my local library plus others in the same system are all online so you can see inventory and availability and, if they are already checked out, when they are due back. that being said, it STILL pisses me off as well that books don't get returned because even though i eventually get what i want sent to me from elsewhere it would be convenient just to run down to my local library and yank it off the shelf myself.

So, yes, leave the books ALONE!!1 I am grateful public libraries still exist.

11. And she knows because she read them herself very carefully
Watch and see if these books don't suddenly become very popular with teens. This publicity always backfires!

12. Problem solved
The library "burned" her library card, so she can't interfere with what others read. Just giving this publicity whore what she wants is doing no good for anyone.

13. Well, I'm so glad this woman is making decisions on behalf of everyone else.
I'm sure her morals and standards are much higher than those of others, and she alone is qualified to determine what others should and should not read.

The Seminole County Library should file a police report and tell the police they want their books back.

I'm sure this is much better than parents sitting down with their kids and talking to them about sex and drugs and explaining the risks involved with both. :eyes:

So typical. Let everyone else be responsible for raising your children, and censorship is OK as long as it's your idea. :eyes:

14. Is this her way to shut down the socialist libraries?
If all the baggers checked out all the books in the socialist libraries around the country and never returned them, the socialist libraries would have to shut down, wouldn't they?

however, Umbertro Eco did a lot more with the material in 'Name of the Rose'.

20. Lt. Bookman...
"Let me tell you something, funny boy... You know that little stamp? The one that says New York Public Library? Well, that may not mean anything to you, but that means a lot to me. One whole helluva lot. Sure, go ahead, laugh if you want to. I've seen your type before -- flashy, making the scene, flaunting convention. Yeah, I know what you're thinking... Why's this guy making such a big stink about old library books? Let me give you a hint, junior. Maybe we can live without libraries, people like you and me.... Maybe. Sure, we're too old to change the world. What about that kid, sitting down, opening a book right now in a branch of the local library and finding pictures of pee-pees and wee-wees in The Cat in the Hat and The Five Chinese Brothers. Doesn't he deserve better? Look, if you think this is about overdue fines and missing books, you'd better think again. This is about that kid's right to read a book without getting his mind warped. Or maybe that turns you on, Seinfeld... Maybe that's how you get your kicks... You and your goodtime buddies... I've got a flash for you, joy boy. Partytime is over."

22. They should handle it the same way our local libraries do.
Once a book is 6 months overdue, the library simply replaces it and sends you a bill (cost of the book+staff time charges+replacement fee). After that happens, they won't even take the book back...you just bought it, and they'll send you straight to collections if you refuse to pay for it.

I've never understood why all libraries don't work this way.
