This oil spill may have been prevented ...

In 2001, Dick Cheney had a secret meeting with the big oil executives. Democrats and many in the media tried to find out what was discussed in that meeting. Eventually, it went all the way to the Supreme Court and the Court ruled in Cheney's favor. What was discussed in the meeting was never made public.

Now, it is being discovered that Cheney and the Bush oil people decided not to press the oil companies to put shut-off valves on their off-shore drilling. It saved the oil companies about $500,000 dollars on each well. That is a pittance to these big companies but money is money. Now, we are stuck with that decision. Most likely, this spill could have been prevented.
