The Disenfranchinator? Complaint Filed: CA Election Dates Will 'Disenfranchise Latinos' Too!
Edited on Thu May-06-10 05:05 PM by BradBlog

Complaint Filed: CA Special Election Dates Will 'Disenfranchise Latinos' As Well as Troops
Hispanic voting rights advocates, Democrats, seeking federal injunction of Schwarzenegger's compressed election schedule...

It's not just the troops and the election officials who are now acting on concerns of disenfranchisement. Now the Hispanic community and Democrats are charging the Governator's special election dates will "thwart voter turnout within minorities communities".

On the heels of The BRAD BLOG's coverage yesterday reporting on worries that thousands of overseas and military voters could be disenfranchised by CA Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's order for an early special election schedule in the state, and that election officials were "outraged" by the timing and concerned about the costs, minority groups and the Democratic Party are now filing suit to halt the impending election, charging the compressed dates are in violation of the federal Voting Rights Act.

Yesterday, retired twenty-year armed services veteran and Monterey talk-radio host Scott Dick detailed how the expedited special election schedule meant that ballots could not possibly be printed and sent to military family and personnel serving overseas prior to the 45-day minimum requirement of the federal Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment (MOVE) Act. He charged that there will not be enough time for those voters to receive and return their ballots in time to be counted in the special election and that thousands could be disenfranchised.

State election officials, The BRAD BLOG has learned, share similar worries...

4. Thanks Oldtimer... I wish...
Wish more folks appreciated how this kind of wholesale disenfranchisement is an affront to everything this nation is supposed to stand for.

If you don't care now, please don't come a crying about it in November. :-(

7. He was elected because of a recall over a single car tax.
The whole thing was ludicrous.

11. an auto registration fee increase that was
written into a bill signed by pete wilson. That increase was tied to any decrease in state revenues and was designed so cities and counties did not suffer drastic cuts when revenue declined.

Gee, steroid boy that repeal didn't work out so well huh? There is now talk about re-instating it.

I truly hope the people in this state are finally over electing 'B' movie actors who think they can govern. (Why is it only rethug actors turn to politics, but 'hollywood' is regularly raked over the coals as being soooo liberal.)

15. I did see it. That's not what I asked.
I asked what it is about the date(s) that would dampen Latino turnout. I don't think anyone would fail to vote because the date is in violation of the VOA.

6. Way to support the troops there, Arnie.
This big guy will need not but a mirror to know what a small man looks like, should this play out based on his agenda. If only I could make him recall the day he first arrived in the state, and consider what that state and the things it does has since done for him. What that guy's answer would be to whether or not this is returning the favor.

Is there a chance of some national radio exposure on this? Thom, Big Eddie, Randi, and Mike especially I'm sure, would love to see some light shed, are you planning to fill in for anybody anytime soon?

K and R with a boo 2 U, B2.

10. How does it disinfranchise minorities?
Or are we just talking about minorities in the military?

13. From a quick scan of the pdf, this is what I think the complaint says.
Edited on Fri May-07-10 02:05 PM by EFerrari
The county in question is subject to the Voting Rights Act. That means they have to apply for a "pre-clearance" from the Attorney General before they conduct elections, and they have not done so.

In particular, the complaint anticipates that the number of polling places will be reduced in such a way as to deny voters in minority areas good access to the polls.

It was a REALLY quick read but that's what I understood.
