Oil spill may fatally wound Gulf fishing industry

by Bonnie Azab Powell

Among the more than 600 animal species at risk from the massive oil spill in the Gulf are their bipedal predators. May usually marks the start of the Gulf fishing season, Capt. Kip Marquize tells the National Resources Defense Council in this video, but he and other Louisiana fishers are cooling their heels on the docks and rapidly running out of cash. Most fishers operate on thin margins, with only enough in the bank to buy equipment and ready their boats for May. "The spill could not have come at a worse time ... We out of luck," he says.

1. I'll get flamed for this, but
I have far more concern for the ecosystem that's being horribly altered than I do for those that overharvest from it.

It's almost comedic. So much of the news here hasn't been about the destruction of habitat, the needless deaths of so many animals. No, it's more about "oh, no! there goes the price of seafood!"

Have at it...

5. Oh don't get me wrong
I feel horrible for folks that are having sleepless nights because their trade is in serious jeopardy right now. They, hell many of us, are living in week-to-week and month-to-month times. My bigger concern is, however, the damage that we've done that can't/won't be turned around.

4. Yours is not an unreasonable position
My wife majored in marine biology during college and spent a lot of time at the Gulf of Mexico. She knows for a fact that overfishing has been a problem in the Gulf for some time.

We need food, true, but marine wildlife needs to sustain its populations, too.

6. What anti-environmentalists don't get is that concern for humans is
at the crux of all environmental laws. Since we're at the top of the food chain, everything that happens to species below will eventually affect us.
