Politics, Not Religion, May Drive Pakistan's Militants
Source: npr

The militancy that investigators say Time Square bomb suspect Faisal Shahzad may have encountered in Pakistan is a diverse alphabet suit: the TTP (Pakistan Taliban), the LeT (Lashkar e Taiba), among others. Pakistan analysts say the militants groups, once distinct and separate, are increasingly fusing.

There is a thriving underground trade in selling information and even assets — which Shahzad may have been. That a son of a vice air marshal with impeccable credentials could fall prey to extremists is seen as an especially troubling turn, signaling that political radicalization — and not religious fundamentalism — is at work.
