On comedians and the media and the prophetic voice.
I believe strongly that the modern social commentators who are actually worth listening to are comedians and the authors of science of fiction, and not the talking head newscasters in the media (except Maddow and Olbermann, but they're also people of great humor), the shitpots on talk radio, or, sadly, even most journalists.

There was a good, though stupidly short, article in Wired Magazine a while ago saying that the realm of literature that offers social commentary left the "serious" literature world a few decades ago, and is now being done almost solely in science fiction (which had been doing it since the beginning of the genre).

I think that article is right - the modern serious literature (while wonderful) is more about holding a mirror up to reality and regurgitating it back, but without commentary on it; we're in a period of high realism in literature. If you're not reading science-fiction, you should be. Lots of great stuff going on there offering commentary on today.

The science fiction writers are also the only people really giving us viable visions of the future.

I think we should make it mandatory that our government leaders read science fiction. They should also be reading books on science and scientific theory. Especially Republicans. Seriously, is there any group of people more monolithically ignorant of reality than Republicans? It's fucking criminal.

I'll also say that the only real prophets (in the sense of offering immediate critique of current society) left today are the comedians - I came up with this thought about a decade ago when I was introduced to Bill Hicks, and came to the realization that, while he was ostensibly a comedian, he was really a preacher using comedy as his vehicle.

I spend a lot of time with preachers and folks religious, because that's my world, and though I'm in the liberal camp of things, and so most are somewhat prophetic, I do think that most of the truly valuable prophetic insight is coming from the comedians, whether religious or secular. The church and the synagogue and others seem to have given up their prophetic voice (starting sometime in the late 70s/early 80s).

And thank God the hole is being filled by others - the comedians. Bill Hicks, Eddie Izzard, Stephen Colbert, John Stewart, Ron White, George Carlin, David Cross, Lewis Black, and so on.

I'm thinking of comedians and this stuff today because it was the final of the celebrity Jeopardy year-long contest and (no spoilers, so don't worry), it was all comedians (Jane Curtain, Cheech Marin, and Michael McKean). I noticed throughout the year, that every time a "news" person or person of that ilk was on the show, they did really, really poorly. Wolf Blitzer ended up -$4000 on his showing. I'm sure if they had Rush Limbaugh on, he'd be fucking slaughtered as well. Conservatives and news people do ludicrously poorly on that show.

And I apologize that this is not as tightly argued or literate as it should be - I've got a Martini in me, and it's really gone to my head. But I open it up for discussion. Assuming that what I wrote is coherent enough to begin one. Sorry if it isn't.

1. Shit - thought I was in the Lounge. Mods, if you want to move it, go ahead.
If it works for GD, then keep it here. Up to you.

I don't know what counts as good GD material, so I leave it up to you.

2. Old guy that i am I was ushered into political interest by the likes of
Mort Sahl, Tom Lehrer, a bit of Lenny Bruce, a young George Carlin and Dick Gregory.
Always had to find the comedians to find out what the real truth was.

3. Your attention is directed to
Shakespeare's fools. Many of his plays have a fool who has the king's (or duke's or whatnot) ear. Because he is the fool, he can say virtually anything. Shakespeare often had him speaking truth, disguised as banter.

5. Aye - indeed! The role of prophet has reverted back to the jester
after a few centuries of it being elsewhere.

6. I agree about the sci-fi

If you haven't ever checked out the version of the series "Battlestar Galactica" that aired on the Sci-Fi (now "SyFy") Channel for four years (ending last year), you really need to get the DVDs and watch the series from start to finish.

Great writing and PLENTY of social commentary on the "W" years.

So sad that it's over now, but it was planned from the start as a four-season series so it ended right when it should have.

9. OMG, yes! BG was frakking AWESOME!
Even taken out of the cultural context in which it was written, it's just plain fantastic writing.

But absolutely also incredible and wonderful commentary on the Shrubbie years of damn-near fascist takeover of the country.

And I think it totally brilliant that the president was the secretary (or whatever) of education. Perfect!

8. Comedy for the masses, real science for the country's leaders
If the president and congress were just aware of what is possible today they would be better able to lead our country.

10. Snowcrash
Genius, prophetic, and funny.

Don't leave Harry Shearer off that list. What you've pointed out is the best thing about comedy. Telling the hard truths in an easily understandable, entertaining, and accessible way. No matter what their critics thought of Lenny Bruce and George Carlin, they always understood their messages.

11. I agree with everything you and the other posters have said.
Harsh truths dressed as comedy can make it into people's minds more readily.

12. If you want to know the truth, listen to the comics.
George Carlin, Frank Zappa, Lewis Black and many others.

I do not read sci-fi, but George Carlin's books will tell you enough truth to get you started. That and THE REAL FRANK ZAPPA BOOK by Peter Occhiogrosso.

Oh and a bit of philosopher John Lennon:

"Our society is run by insane people for insane objectives. I think we're being run by maniacs for maniacal ends and I think I'm liable to be put away as insane for expressing that.
That's what's insane about it."

----John Lennon

As soon as you’re born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you’re clever and they despise a fool
Till you’re so fucking crazy you can’t follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

When they’ve tortured and scared you for twenty odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can’t really function you’re so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

Keep you doped with religion and sex and tv
And you think you’re so clever and classless and free
But you’re still fucking peasants as far as I can see

A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

There’s room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me

---"Working Class Hero", John Lennon

14. There's a brilliantly funny British writer whose fantasy fiction...
...sideways "commentaries" on our pathetic existence have earned him a knighthood.

He's Sir Terry Pratchett, my favorite writer.
