Former first lady Laura Bush couldn't attend a "Mother's Day Luncheon" today to benefit Genesis Women's Shelter, as expected.

So she sent someone who called himself a "poor substitute": her husband.


George W. Bush kept the sellout crowd of 2,000 at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas laughing as he explained why his wife, the event's honorary chair, could not be there.

"She is selling her book," the former president told the crowd dining on gazpacho and salads in the ballroom.


Bush introduced the luncheon's keynote speaker, his former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice.

For him to say to the womens' shelter group that she chose her book tour over this fundraising event..talk about a public throw-Pickles-under-the-bus.
