You want ugly? For that, you have to look at a mind, not a face.

2. I respect that man, he corrected me once, I learned from one of his columns.
Edited on Sat May-08-10 11:19 PM by RandomThoughts
Many months ago, during a conflict I said something a bit barbed, mostly because of the person I was talking to, and not in the best way.

Later Roger Ebert wrote an article that helped me to realize, and better future thoughts on the phrasing I used in that earlier conversation.

I like the guy.

16. I never much cared for Ebert before
but reading his blog since he lost his voice, I have gained quite a bit of respect for the man. He is thoughtful and thought provoking. Unfortunately, a few weeks ago, I allowed my new found respect for the man cloud my former belief that I couldn't trust his movie reviews. I can't remember the movie I went to because of his rave review but I really hate walking out of a theater pining for the lost two hours of my life.

17. He has some strange taste in films.
But his reviews are always interesting and make me see at least some good in some otherwise dreadful movies.

28. I learned long ago that I can like a person without liking the same films.

4. K & R
I consider his reviews in choosing which movies I want to see. With the exception of "Phantom Menace," he hasn't steered me wrong.

Go Roger!

7. I know of one movie he misjudged totally.
It was "The Life of David Gale", about a professor who ends up on death row in Texas.

Roger Ebert gave it an "F" as if he didn't even think about what he saw.

Apparently Ebert just could not imagine that happening, but then I could figure out the legal steps, and I discussed them with one of my law school classmates who was in the movie as an extra. We both went to law school here in Texas.

There was some interesting stuff at the end of the movie that we discussed. I think Ebert just could not understand the people with a thirst for the death penalty and vengeance in Texas.

11. Ebert has misjudged plenty of movies, but I agree with him on that one
I think Ebert is well aware of the bloodlust in Texas--he talked about it quite a bit in his review, iirc.

21. he's a big fan of Nicolas Cage (so am I) and I suspect it colors his view of all NC films.
Some of those are excellent, of course, such as Raising Arizona and Leaving Las Vegas.

He gave it four stars.

I like Ebert, though, and tend to like his reviews even when I disagree with him.

8. Why does Caleb Howe look like someone I would want to punch?

Okay, so violence and being immature are things Rethugs do, I know. But to make fun of a man like Roger who obviously has been through hell is just disgusting.

19. Something lost on the baggers
is that at some unknown moment in their lives they can become victims of an accident that can disfigure them for life. I have seen it.

And they imagine themselves to be Christians. How could anyone embrace Christianity with these people running around claiming to represent Christ's church.

20. Christ has nothing to do
with them. Even if you don't believe in Christ he's got nothing to do w/it...they exude that evil on their own.

They are just plain evil little bridge trolls. I am comforted with the knowledge that whatever good happens in the hereafter they will certainly NOT be a part of it. They have the illusion that one day their 'god' will rise up and strike down their enemies.

It's not going to happen...ever. They will just die in the cold, empty little bubble they've created for themselves.

22. I never disliked a movie that he liked.
I do sometimes disagree with him when he doesn't like one, but if he praises it, I can rely on it.

(I used to use Siskel as my corrective on movies Ebert hated. I agreed with his positives too. They were a great team.)

Part of your body?
What's the ugliest
Part of your body?
Some say your nose
Some say your toes
(I think it's your mind)
But I think it's YOUR MIND
(Your mind)
I think it's your mind, woo woo
