America: The Story of Us (History Channel)
Edited on Sun May-09-10 11:41 AM by Jeff In Milwaukee
What a steaming load of crapola.

Aside from being abysmally bad history (they take Longfellow's version of Paul Revere's ride as though it were historical fact), the people providing historical context include Colin Powell, Mike Bloomberg, some Ex-Navy SEAL dude, Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani. And just for "balance" they throw in observations from Al Sharpton, Alec Baldwin and Martha Stewart(?!).

As my twelve-year-old son observed while watching the part about the American Revolution, apparently every time some passed gas it constituted a "turning point" in the war. How many turning points to you get in a single war, anyway?

Miss this stinker if you can.

13. It's barely poetical....
I had to memorize the whole damned thing in the fifth grade. Punishment for something or another.

Hearing that Donald Trump or Alec Baldwin were historical consultants? Aaargh.

3. I watched this epsiode last week. I can't believe Pres. Obama put his face at the beginning
of this load of horse dung. It really was bad. I'm sure to be missing the other parts of their "history" re-make.

7. It's amazing how poorly done some of their stuff is.
I'm kind of a WWII buff. For years I couldn't believe some of the mistakes they made with combat footage. They might be describing action late in the war and show footage that is clearly from early in the war.
One was supposedly showing Navy F6 Hellcat fighters in the Pacific Theater and they were actually Thunderbolt fighter-bombers in Europe. Not only were they in Europe but it clearly showed the Normandy hedgerow countryside, no water in sight and they had the D-Day invasion stripes!

8. Me too. I got it from my dad.
I remember watching 'The World at War' series with him when it was aired here in the 70s.

Probably the first documentary series I ever saw.

I picture the editing on History Channel shows going something like this: 'Yeah, put some airplanes here. What shots have we not recycled yet on this show?'

Ugh.

16. Just about any decent WWII war gamer or guy that built a lot
of models as a kid could do way better.

14. How could I have neglected Newt?
Although to be fair, Newt was a history professor before he took up destroying democracy as his vocation. Unlike the rest of the commentators on the show, at least he has some academic bona fides.

6. Halfway through the first installment, I made up my mind not to watch the others.
Crapalicious "history", all right. When they did the whole Paul Revere's Ride thing, even my wife, who is not much interested in history but knows the truth anyway, rolled her eyes.

To say I'm disappointed is an understatement.

11. Sounds like exactly what I expected from the Hearst-story channel.
They have distorted recent history (everything after and including 11/22/1963) to the point of laughability, so I'm not at all surprised to hear they fucked up the older history as well.

One of the reasons I really don't miss cable TV all that much.

17. The History Channel should be called The right wing History Channel
Their bias became clear to me after watching the shows about the presidents.

20. It is a Paen to... American Exceptionalism
I watched the first and after barfing profusely... have avoided it

It is also a great man of history tale... (A school of history that started to die, but has not completely died, a few decades ago)

We just cannot completely kill it. DIE, you ugly thing DIE!!!!!

That said, there is one little point that MILITARY historians have argued many a times, including Kagan, the sniper that killed the British Commander early in the war...and they killed the will to fight for the British forces, well sometimes commanders matter that much... what they did not go into is that shooting commanding officers was a no-no of 18th century warfare... I mean real men did not do that. And yes, our heroic men, Morgan's Raiders, were properly called... ready for this... TERRORISTS in Parliament.

Just offering a little ahem context.

As to Godfellow, at least they did not go into the Washington Image image of George, who could never EVER tell a lie... oh wait, they did, when they covered the Spy Ring he personally ran.
