McCain’s new ‘Complete the Danged Fence’ ad features the wrong sheriff.

In his attempt to portray himself as more right-wing than his far-right senatorial competitor J.D. Hayworth, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) put out a new ad this past weekend called “Complete The Danged Fence.” In it the ad, McCain is walking along the border in the southern Arizona town of Nogales, telling Sheriff Paul Babeu about his 10-point border security plan:

There’s something wrong with McCain’s video: Nogales is in Santa Cruz County. Babeu, however, is from Pinal County, which is 115 miles north in central Arizona.

1. I picked that up.
I've been to Nogales many times. I didn't know who that guy was, but he's not local.
The fence is a joke, a huge waste of money. A 12 foot ladder would be all you needed.

4. Or a tunnel would do the trick. Seriously, how stupid is the idea of a fence?
And as I heard a joke on the radio - who would they hire to build it. That's one of those jokes that's not funny, but you can't help but snicker.

8. Yup. That ain't Nogales.
Having lived in Tucson for a year, Nogales is just a straight shot down south of I-10.

Visited there three times. Nice place for cheap junk.

9. A fence is a great idea. Mexicans are too primitive to understand ladders so it will work fine!

10. I think Babeu was used for 2 reasons.
Sheriff Babeu was in the spotlight and received a lot of mainstream news coverage recently. It was in his jurisdiction that Sheriff Louie Puroll was shot (superficially) by five suspected "undocumented immigrants" drug smugglers on Friday Apr 30th.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=8250169&mesg_id=8251381

Babeu has been outspoken in support of SB1070, along with Arpaio. McCain is cashing in on Babeu's "celebrity", while reminding everyone of the recent "Deputy shot by illegals."

Nogales is in Santa Cruz County. Sheriff Tony Estrada has come out against SB1070. I doubt McCain would be able to get help from Santa Cruz Sheriff Estrada on this issue.

Meet Sheriff Tony Estrada

Sheriff Tony Estrada was first sworn into office on January 1, 1993. Sheriff Estrada was born in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, immigrated with his family as an infant and grew up in Nogales, Arizona. He started his law enforcement career as a dispatcher with the Nogales Police Department and worked his way up through the ranks, retiring as a captain in 1991.

15. Haven't followed it closely enough to know the answer to than question or whether or not that was
actually investigated. Have been too depressed over the oil terrorists.

16. Well, I was trying to see what new info has been released
and there's not been much. People are speculating if this event was staged or not. In response to the questions, the 911 call from the deputy was released along with photos of his wound.

"An intense gun battle raged for a minute and some rounds were fired for a total of 20 minutes as the deputy tried to retreat. No one has been charged in the attack, although more than 200 officers from 15-plus agencies detained about 100 suspected illegal immigrants in the area within 24 hours. Two people detained by Pinal deputies Friday and Saturday and two others detained by federal agents south of Pinal County are considered investigative leads. Babeu said that three people are being treated as witnesses and kidnapping victims of the assailants. Immigrants sometimes are forced by smugglers to carry drugs."

Contrary to earlier reports, no shots were fired at the helicopters. They report the deputy fired 46 rounds at his attackers. Also changed from original report, they believe there were 6 people, instead of 5.

Sgt. Dave Hausman said the Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating the incident and processing evidence that could point to some of those detained.

None of the investigation/evidence results have been released yet.
