Internet approaches addressing limit (BBC) {um, sort of}
By Mark Ward
Technology correspondent, BBC News

In less than 18 months there will be no more big blocks of net addresses to give out, estimates suggest.

Predictions name 9 September 2011 as the date on which the last of those tranches is released for net firms and others to use.

Everything connected to the net needs an "IP address" to ensure data reaches the right person or device.

Experts say that the net's entire existing address space will be exhausted about a year after that date.

A newer scheme is being rolled out but many firms and countries are being slow to switch, experts warn.

3. Reminds me of the situation when movable type printing was first invented.
Polish printers cornered the market on Z's, so English and the other languages had to learn to do without as many copies of that letter. That's why other languages have so few Z's in them to this day.

4. For those who are uninitated - they are referring to IPv4.
IPv6 is already approved by all the authorities, and yes, they're fucking slow to roll out.

All of our businesses uses IPv4.

5. Ever tried to memorize a few IPv6 addresses?
Sure, DNS covers that up for most users, but I suspect that many system administrators (who have to set IPv6 addressing up) find it rather taxing.
