Gov. Brewer signs bill targeting ethnic studies

http://www.kold.com/Global/story.asp?S=12466353&Call=Email&Format=HTML

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has signed a bill targeting an ethnic studies program in a Tucson school district.

State schools chief Tom Horne, a Republican running for Attorney General, says the district's ethnic studies program promotes "ethnic chauvinism" and racial resentment toward whites.

The measure prohibits classes that advocate ethnic solidarity, that are designed primarily for students of a particular race or that promote resentment toward a certain ethnic group.

The Tucson Unified School District denies its program promotes resentment.

Six United Nations human rights experts said Tuesday they were concerned about the measure because everyone has the right to learn about his own cultural and linguistic heritage.

2. Arizona is a model of what Teabagger rule looks like.
I did not know about this "law" - pretty outrageous.

10. They already are...I drove through on I-40 yesterday
Edited on Wed May-12-10 12:00 PM by alittlelark
I traverse all 359 miles of I-40 through the state 6-8 times a year. All rest stops are closed, there are 'Closed' signs over state park signs.

I stayed in Needles instead of Kingman on this trip.
I did have to buy gas in the state - 359 miles is 30 miles over my gas tanks storage ability.

5. "It's just like the old South, and it's long past time that we prohibited it," Horne said.
Well just like the old south part is right. Yes I can't see why anyone from Arizona might want to take a class on Mexican-American studies. She'll probably remove Thomas Jefferson from school books next.

9. English Lit, too.
Can't go around promoting one culture and not all of them. And what about Anglo-centric U.S. history? It doesn't start with the freaking pilgrims, hombre.

11. And Napolitano is head of an office that shouldn't even exist. This Arizonan
feels the need to apologize far, far too often.

God damn this governor. At least Napolitano could keep our nutjob legislature in check; they were too damn lazy to overrride her vetoes.
