The Deepwater Horizon accident in the Gulf of Mexico was not the first safety problem that oil rig operator Transocean has suffered in recent years. A review of safety reports logged with the federal government showed the company accounted for almost 75% of all incidents within the past two years involving deepwater platforms in the Gulf, according to an investigation by The Wall Street Journal, even though it maintained only 42% of the rigs.

It also was revealed that many of Transocean’s problems have come since it merged with a rival company, GlobalSantaFe, in late 2007. In the two years before the merger, Transocean ran 30% of the Gulf rigs and was responsible for 33% of the safety incidents.
