Survey: Peanut allergies triple from 1997 to 2008
Survey: Peanut allergies triple from 1997 to 2008

According to a new survey, the rate of peanut allergies in children more than tripled from 1997 to 2008.

The results are published today in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

Researchers at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, surveyed 5,300 households, representing 13,534 individuals in 2008. The survey was previously conducted in 1997 and 2002.

In 2008, 1.4 percent of children in the survey were reported to have peanut allergies, as opposed to just 0.4 percent in 1997. The prevalence of combined peanut or tree nut allergies in children was 2.1 percent in 2008, compared to 0.6 percent in 1997.

1. Maybe it's because allergy patients are still around to be counted...
...and did not drop dead as soon as they were exposed to a peanut.

7. The earlier estimates were based on surveys too.
If the surveys were designed and administered properly the estimate over time should be valid. Nut allergies aren't something that most people self-diagnosis.

6. My mom took me to the doc when I was little, 40 poking/needle tests
Told me I was allergic to PB and bunch of other things.

I went home and got me a big spoon of PB and ate it when mom was not looking. Loved it then, still do, never had a reaction to .......... ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!
