Plans to evacuate due to BP oil spill?
Plans to evacuate the Tampa Bay area are expected to be announced in the coming days as FEMA prepares for what is now being called the worst oil disaster in the history of the world.

5. The respiratory distress is all in their heads, right?
I love the smell of burning oil in the morning. Smells like...victory.

25. Not to mention the dizziness and headaches
That a lot of people here in New Orleans experienced the first time the smell hit the city.

10. No shit. Have you ever seen three million people try to leave town at the same time?
I have, and it ain't pretty. In fact I would describe it as the biggest fuster cluck I've ever seen (the Hurricane Rita stampede out of Houston shortly after Katrina in 2005). It was uuuuu-gly.

11. Hurricane Rita is exactly what I thought about
The 5 hours it usually takes my family to get from the Pt Arthur area to DFW took 24-25 hours. :(

12. I stayed in Houston. There was NO WAY I was going to get out on the freeways,
Edited on Wed May-12-10 06:50 PM by tXr
despite what Dr. Neil, Ed Brandon, and various panicked city council types said.

Edit: also, that was the evacuation where the bus full of senior citizens from a retirement home caught fire and burned while trapped in a MILES and miles-long traffic jam, killing many people.

Very sad.

13. It's always hard with hurricanes
My family wasn't going to evacuate because Rita was tracking to the west of Houston, but then the next day it moved to the east so they had to leave. Better safe than sorry, we're very lucky it didn't make landfall in Houston, it just would have been awful.

15. I'm sorry that your family was so affected by Rita.
As far as Houston goes, Ike was bad enough. I'm dreading a busy season this year and the distinct possibility of being hit with an oilcane.

8. Shame the GOP convention isn't taking place next week.

Breaking news on Twitter from Politico's Mike Allen -- the 2012 Republican National Convention will be held in Tampa.
Florida has been a fiercely contested "swing state" in recent presidential campaigns, and Barack Obama's victory there in 2008 was the Democratic Party's first since 1996.

26. Madsen is a sensationalistic hack.
I recall an article in a similar vein over at Zero Hedge.

The best thing to do is to take things day by day and inform yourself. For all we know, that fancy wine cork will work.

I don't know what's worse....the gov't & BP trying all they can to minimize the problem or ppl like Madsen who seemingly want to generate fear and panic and appear to want a black gulf.

Anyway I kinda doubt that oil will be burned near Tampa anyway. It makes more sense to burn closer to the incident site. But it's always good for municipalities to have these plans in place.

I'd recommend The Oil Drum site for informed discussion about what's going on: http://www.theoildrum.com/
