Gulf Oil Spill More Than 10X Greater Than Thought: Experts
http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2010/05/gulf_oil_spill_more_than_10x_g.html

NPR has learned that much more oil, 70,000 barrels a day or more than ten times the official estimate, is gushing into the Gulf of Mexico from the Deepwater Horizon pipe, based on scientific analysis of the video released Wednesday.

That's the equivalent of one Exxon Valdez tanker full every four days.

The U.S. Coast Guard has estimated that oil was gushing into the ocean at the rate of 5,000 barrels a day. But, again, NPR has been told that estimate is very low.

We'll link in a bit to a segment on All Things Considered that explains more.

4. And that is only 50 barrels a minute, so it's likely true.

5. I remember a report mentioning a similar formation in the Gulf...
produces nearly 150,000 barrels per day. It could be well higher than 70,000.

7. The 5,000 number from the Coast Guard has been questionable
Edited on Thu May-13-10 10:13 PM by janx
from the beginning; I respect the Coast Guard, but they're not as experienced with these things as some environmental scientists are, and these engineers, oceanographers, marine biologists, etc., fully admit that no one can know exactly how much oil is spewing into the Gulf--a fact that is obvious, given the depth of the well.

BP is in one hell of a bind, and they are making their public relations position worse by rejecting scientists. There are articles--not sensationalist ones--about how BP is deflecting. BP is only making matters worse in this regard.

9. In case someone missed this earlier....
Another scary part is the concept I read about that once all the oil spurts out of the well...will the ground above it collapse???
