Just a disorganized thought on the oil spill
All of my life I have been told that oil is fungible, with the meaning that one drop of oil is the same as another because it all averages out in the greater world supply system. This reply is misapplied to all manner of reasonable questions about practices in 'the oil field' but this spill seems to render it meaningless. Yeah, it doesn't matter much where it came from when you are burning it, but somehow in my mind I can't get rid of the idea that when oil is making a profit the few world-wide giants that control its flow are as one in their quest for less regulation, tax, and anything approaching anti-trust legislation. But let a disaster like the one we are witnessing take place and Exxon/Mobile, and Chevron, and whoever in hell it is that runs Russian and Indonesian oil for that matter, and you know the big boys are looking down their noses as British Petroleum and thinking to themselves, 'that poor mother-fucker is on his own on this one'.

I think that every company that is operating in the Gulf ought to be held exactly as responsible as BP for both shutting the flow off and the repair of the damages after its done - it should not be just by the grace of god that they get off scott free, they were just as liable to have caused this problem as BP and just as liable to cause the next one. This isn't a problem of one well or one company, it is a world wide industry that is at fault. And I know that is a hard argument to support, certainly more a result of emotion than analysis, but is how I feel.
