The pieces are coming together....CSM article explains the complex underwater currents in the gulf..
I think finally understand the enormity of this tragedy.

Consider...

The BBC breaking news item about mile-wide and ten mile-long "underwater oil plumes..." says scientists speculate the dispersants may be keeping the oil underwater.

They're wrong, I believe, and here's why...

The AP breaking news story a couple hours ago says models indicate the oil may be in a major current.

THIS story... http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/2010/0515/Gulf-spill-oil-driven-by-complex-ocean-currents-and-eddies

...IS THE BEST and maybe only explanation of the complexity and extent of the currents in the gulf. It is like a mini ocean.

Simply put, OF COURSE THE OIL IS IN A MAJOR CURRENT. The Gulf is crisscrossed by major currents that operate at different levels.

And if the oil entered a major current, that would take it horizontal along with it. The speed/temperature of that current in relation to the one above would keep the oil at that depth.

The plume on the surface looks daunting and promises to be terrible, but it's becoming clear that a far greater tragedy is making tracks in the gulf's depths, ready to spew out on pretty much an coastline.

4. Oil floats on water but not while the water is stirred. It takes time for the oil to settle on top.
And it has a full mile to rise before reaching the surface.

We can expect new patches of Oil to appear on the surface for a very long time in the future.
