Ruiz (May 5, 2010) What: $10,000.00 in Premios (prizes) to encourage the composition of new Tejano/Latino Songs advocating against racism and bigotry and encouraging progressive action against Arizona's anti-immigration law and similar actions like it throughout the nation. First Prize: $6,000.00 Cash or Prepaid Visa check card Second Prize: $2,000.00 Cash or Prepaid Visa check card Third Prize: $1,200.00 Cash or Prepaid Visa check card Fourth Prize: $800.00 Cash or Prepaid Visa check card What type of genres are eligible: Primarily Tejano, conjunto, cumbia, ranchera, corrido, mariachi, pop, and rap? Theme: The original compositions should capture the hopes and dreams of peoples everywhere who seek justice for fellow immigrant persons and families. Songs should serve to advocate against bigotry, educate and inform the general public and Latino community, in particular, about the racism embedded in Arizona-like immigration law. And, advance the hopes, dreams and pride of all, especially immigrants and all righteous peoples in our nation. Who can submit: Primarily song writers, "compositores" (composers) from Texas and South Texas, in particular. When: New compositions must be received by Friday July 18, at 5pm and mailed to: Dr. Paul Ruiz 222 Melliff Drive San Antonio, TX 78216 or email to margaret-ruiz@sbcglobal.net Contest Details: Compositions must be submitted in written and recorded CD format; need not be of commercial quality, along with completed registration form. A panel of judges will screen all entries and select the 15 best songs. These recordings may be given air time, as time may allow, on local radio stations prior to the formal performance on weekend of September 3, 2010. The Top 15 songs will be performed live on the weekend of September 3, 2010 at a local venue in San Antonio, TX (to be announced). Composers of these 15 songs will present their compositions before a live audience. A second panel of judges will select the top four songs. Winners will be announced that same evening. While the sponsors will promote this effort primarily within South Texas, it welcomes entries from elsewhere as well. Get Involved: Dr. Ruiz and his wife need help! We need help getting the word out to composers, music educators, church choirs, and artists. Volunteers are welcome to help the Ruiz family do this "concurso"even better. Legal Notice: The Sponsors of this contest reserve the right to revoke awards if any submission is found to be plagiarized or improper in any manner inconsistent with the law, or the contest does not receive sufficient entries to make this contest worthwhile. In exchange for being considered in this contest, the contestants/composers agree to give the sponsor permission to print and/or record the compositions, individually or collectively, with proceeds from sales going only to support charitable causes of the sponsor's choosing.
