Schlumberger says its crew left Horizon day of fire

SAN FRANCISCO, May 19 (Reuters) - Schlumberger Ltd (SLB.N), the world's largest oilfield services company, said on Wednesday it had a crew on the Deepwater Horizon that departed only hours before the explosion and fire that engulfed the rig.

The company, which had not previously revealed its work on the Horizon, said in an emailed statement that it performed wireline services for BP Plc (BP.L) on the rig in March and April, completing the last services on April 15 and leaving a crew on standby in case any more were needed.

"On the morning of April 20, 2010, BP notified the Schlumberger crew that it could return to its home base in Louisiana," Schlumberger said in a statement, which a spokesman for the company confirmed by phone.

The crew departed the rig at about 11:00 a.m. on April 20 on one of BP's regularly scheduled helicopter flights, Schlumberger said. The explosion occurred at about 10:00 p.m. that night, and the rig sank two days later, which led to a massive oil spill off the Gulf Coast.

2. What caught my attention,
Knowing how BP is keeping the world from really seeing what this toxic goo is doing, was this...

"On the morning of April 20, 2010, BP notified the Schlumberger crew that it could return to its home base in Louisiana"

After having the SLB Crew sitting around on its arse for five days?...that kinda shit costs lotsa money!

3. Your earlier post seems to be turning out to be at least partly true.

Wasn't the earlier rumor that Schlumberger got their own helicopter to take them ashore?

oping for serious criminal charges on this, multiple charges.

6. That is my understanding also,
Edited on Thu May-20-10 12:12 AM by PJPhreak
Schlumberger will do what ever it takes to do something right, keep its employees safe and to maintain as safe a working environment up to and including giving supervisors the right to shut down any SLB work the supers don't believe is safe...for any reason.

10. Some belive its better for the "Bottom Line"...
To spend somewhat more getting it right the first time then having the shit sued outta you later.

It would have cost BP a Shitload less to do this right the first time then its gonna cost 'em now.

9. I'm not sure,
I don't think the MSM would go out of their way on this considering the damming amount of evidence that BP was flaunting rules and regs. as well as allowing what amounts to slip-shod engineering, malfunctioning equipment and poor decisions by those in charge of drilling operations.

but it shows what is first in BP's mind (and any other major oil co.)...

The Benjamins, its all about the Benjamins.

14. I don;t know about all that,lol...
The person who posted that over at "The Oil Drum" also stated that he had spoken to a local (N.O.L.A.) reporter who said (And I paraphrase) "I Haven't heard that,Ill Check into this"

The Oil Drum has a great thread about how much Goo is gushing into the GoM.

Back in the Sixties I was The geeky kid with the R.C Airplanes and the Schwinn Sting-Ray with Dads Rototiller Engine bolted to it,...sailing down the street at 40 mph with his little brother on the handlebars.
To this day I feel like a walking oxymoron,a Treehugging,Peacenik Deadhead who thinks that the sound of a '69 Malibu with a 450 Hp. V-8 is one of the sweetest sounds in the world,So this kinda stuff is fairly easy for me to get my head around.

15. I read that oil drum blog last wkend..
& got a lot out of it..
but I think what YOU did was the spark..
YOU understood it thoroughly enough to explain it to DUers,
& DUers ran with it,kicked, rec'd & shared it..
+ LOCALS' rumors, discussing,
I think fueled the NOLA reporter's pursuit of this story.

That *ENERGY* expands.
Starts with a *spark,tho'..& YOU sure did THAT, Sparky!

Great mental picture of YOU as a Kid!wheeeeeeee!
