3 Things that need to be done ASAP as per the Gulf Oil disaster
Edited on Thu May-20-10 10:57 AM by Botany
As a person with a little background in ecology. 2.3. from Ohio University in Environmental Biology :wow:

1) The response to this problem must be federalized and given top priority. It is now very clear BP has been
lying about the size of the undersea gushers of oil and gas and of the ecological problems these toxins will
cause to the environment. The very real potential of stress to the supportive capacity of the planet is there
w/ a nonstop stream of oil and dynamics of the inter-ocean currents should no be down played. That oil
leak must be stopped ASAP.

2) The oil disbursements being sprayed on the spill have the real potential of making the problem worse.
It DOES NOT change the basic chemical make of oil but just spreads it out. For any sort of ecological mitigation
the oil should be "as together as possible" in order to try to collect it. The toxic nature of what BP is using
needs to be looked at too.

3) We need to build the most massive ark (as in noah's ark) ever in order to save as many living species
as possible in a nursery / animal rescue areas as we can. I mean we need to harvest coral and grow it elsewhere
w/ the goal being its reintroduction when the environment can support it. The same goes for the American
Crocodile, the mangroves, Key deer, beach grasses, fishes, turtles, oysters, and so on. The protection of
that genetic material for future generations is critical. BP w/ the contract for 1/4 of all the oil in
Iraq can damn well afford to pay for this too. Haliburton & Transocean can pony up too.

This very theoretical saving of the biological make up of the area effected by this disaster will be generational
in nature. But it is something that must be done.

1. I really like #3
That is the kind of thinking that will make a difference.

I want us as a people to apply the same kind of thinking to CLEAN energy.

as soon as possible (as soon as I can afford to) I am getting rid of my car and getting an electric model or something

...something has to give, maybe we should all look at wind power again too...
Here in Nevada there is a company that makes smaller windmills for personal use. I believe the last time my parents checked, they were backed up a year on orders!
Demand is out there to change the way we do things...let's GO

(btw...you are right about the whole dispersant thing too...what a bleepin' mess!)

4. How about an armada of tankers and smaller boats,
each set up to siphon oil from the surface and below, then store the oil/water mix for later refining? Siphoning/pumping this gunk up would help reduce the spill.

1. I'm not convinced the federal government isn't already doing everything in it's power. At least anything that would really ameliorate the situation.

2. Spreading it out is mitigating it. The major problem with the oil is thick bulk amounts floating on the surface.

3. Lulz.
