Four Police Shot - two dead in West Memphis Arkansas
http://edition.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/05/20/arkansas.2.police.killed/
<snip>
Two police officers were fatally shot and another two were wounded Thursday in two separate shootings allegedly by the same suspects in West Memphis, Arkansas, police said.

The suspects, who were using an assault weapon, were themselves fatally shot.

The incident began around 11:40 a.m. (12:40 p.m. ET), when police made a traffic stop on a white minivan traveling eastbound on I-40 at Airport Road, said Inspector Bert Shelton, who is assigned to city hall for the West Memphis Police Department.

The occupant or occupants of the van shot two police officers and sped off, he said. One of the victims died at the scene; the other was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died, Shelton said. One of the two fatalities was the son of the city's chief of police, he added.

3. That's poor reporting.
What exactly are they calling an "assault rifle?"

Did they have a rifle with full auto capability? 'Cuz those are illegal for most of us...

12. Not lazy - they have an agenda.
"Assault weapons" is a known-quantity buzzword used only by the usual suspects with the usual agenda. It is generally followed by the word "ban." More clarity and description would be potentially damaging to their cause.

I have not heard what the weapons were. They apparently had some firepower.

If you kill the Police Chief's son an shoot the Sheriff you are a dead man. No weapon on earth is going to change that.

It would make things quicker for those who were "forced into a life of crime".

He looks very young. The article says they had Ohio license plates. I'm going to follow this story. Why would two young men shoot and kill police over a traffic stop and then in a Walmart parking lot.

22. Yep if this is the bunch they Aryan Nation and date back a long ways
There's a book by an FBI informant called In the Devil's Den that details the FBI taking them down. Also coming from that church back in late 90's was the Kehoe brothers. Most of you have probably seen the shooting video of them shooting it out with two police officers in Wilmington, OH. They were on the run for quite awhile I seem to remember.

I believe this bunch also had a plot to assasinate Morris Dees of the SPLC.

24. Scary people

A trend? i don't know statistics, and cops have been getting shot at since there were cops, but it seems the Skinheads are mighty trigger-happy for cops these days.

If judges would lock these goons up when they beat their wives and kids, rather than keeping room at the prisons for more pot smokers, maybe we could keep these violent fools off the streets.

But then they probably don't make good prison labor, so the prison lobby doesn't push for mandatory minimums for abusing women and children....sigh

At any rate, as much as bad cops infuriate me, me heart goes out to the families of these cops murdered just doing their jobs.

RIP Officers

That investigated the Robin Hill murders. I was just wondering because the Sheriff in that case, I couldn't remember his name.

32. Don't have a clue
I just read that these two morons
...opened fire on the pair of officers with AK-47s as they were working along I-40. The suspects were apprehended and killed in a parking lot a short time later.

The officers were running drug interdiction when they pulled over a white van with Ohio tags. Two men exited the van and opened fire with the AK-47s on the officers. Officer Brandon Paudert was killed instantly. Officer Bill Evans died a while later at the hospital.

33. It is very tragic
That type of work, the drug interdiction, is the most dangerous. Because most drug runners are armed and they know the punishment for being caught transporting drugs is so harsh in this country, that they would rather shoot it out and risk dying then go back to jail. I was just curious if this Sheriff that was wounded was the same one that was in an HBO documentary that I saw. Because that sheriff seemed to support the innocence of the West Memphis Three.

34. The stupid war on drugs cost two officers their lives
Not to hijack this thread, but does anyone think that these officers would still be alive if not for the stupid and way too harsh penalties we have in this country for people who are caught with drugs. These two cops, according to the news reports, were running drug interdiction along the Interstate. It is quite likely that these suspects decided to open fire on these cops because they knew that they were likely looking at some very long time in prison if caught; simply because of the drugs they had on them. These men had probably been to jail before, and most likely knew that they would be looking at close to a life sentence if caught. So what happens, they decide to shoot it out with the police, rather than surrender.

If we had, as a country, the least bit of common sense when it came to drug use, and the the sentences that people receive in this country, it is likely that these officers would still be alive. If for example we eliminated the harshest penalties that are enforced with the law, and reduced sentences that are much more in line with other non-dangerous, non-violent crimes, then these suspects might have felt compelled to surrender. For example if they knew their fate was going to be a couple months in jail, or even a year, they and the officers would likely still be alive.

It is so sad all around.

37. I did not know this was drug interdiction

work the cops were doing.

Doesn't change the tragedy of the situation, but doesn't make me feel so sorry for law enforcement in general.

These "interdiction" stops are often no more than shake-downs. Law enforcemnt makes a lot of $$$$ and seizes all sorts of booty from these type operations. Eventually, don't they think people will get fed up with it?

I've been through a few of these searches and they wouldn't cause me to harm anyone, but lots of folks are off the deep end these days. and sociopathic people think they can get away with shooting cops.

Did these two goons actually have drugs on them? Anyone know?

have you heard if they actually found any drugs in the van?
