Conservatives Make More Changes to Texas Curriculum
:puke:

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Public school students in Texas would be required to evaluate efforts by global organizations to undermine U.S. sovereignty in one of a series of changes that conservatives on the State Board of Education made Thursday to new social studies guidelines.

With little discussion from Democrats on the board, conservatives also added language that would require students to discuss solvency of ''long-term entitlements such as Social Security and Medicare.

<snip>

In some of the most contentious debate, the board added a reference to President Barack Obama, which critics had complained was conspicuously absent. But Democrats showed more life than they had all day when Republican David Bradley tried to refer to the first black president as Barack Hussein Obama.

"I think we give him the full honor and privilege of his full name," Bradley said.

"The intent behind what you're doing, I think is pretty obvious," said Republican Bob Craig, urging Bradley to withdraw the suggestion.

6. No, it happened in Bayside, Queens.
People don't come out for the off-year local elections and they don't inform themselves about the small offices that are up for grabs. So any determined assault will take them. That happened to our local school board. It went right wing extreme before anybody noticed.

The small elections are the vital ones. We do a very poor job of educating people about that. These are the ones that deal with OUR children. These are the ones that decide on traffic lights on OUR streets. We don't allot any money for these elections, but the rightwing took this country from the bottom up not the top down.

4.  Sounds like they have one reasonable Repug, Bob Craig who seemed to rescue a few things.

5. Again, accounting for it being 2010 and kids will have to compete
not just nationally but globally, what is the point of individual states and regions choosing textbooks. We have national testing, it would seem to follow that curriculum would be more standardized as well.

Local control and funding of education is a debacle.

7. It will be interesting to see what the teacher's unions have to say about teaching this garbage.
There have to be some radicals who will stand up and say I won't do it.
