I had an uncle who owned a gas station and wouldn't let non-whites use the bathroom
And that was in the 1970's. He was a racist bastard. And mean too. Especially to his wife and kids. I never liked him even when I was a kid. All I remember was being terrified of him.

The gas station is right on Route 1 in Momence, Ilinois. Not far from where I am at right now.

Let me tell you a little story about uncle Eldrid. He died about 20 years ago and I went to the funeral. The cemetery was right down the road from where he had lived about a mile. We used to drag race our cars on this road when we were kids.

So it was middle of winter and cold as hell out. Right before the funeral began one of his neighbors who I remembered as a kid, nice old guy, came up to me and started telling me about his dog that just died. He said he wanted to bury it but the ground was so frozen he couldn't get a shovel into it to dig a hole. As he was telling me this I noticed he was looking at the hole uncle Eldrid was about to get dropped into. About then he asked if it would be alright if after everyone left and before they filed the hole in if he could lay his beloved dog to rest with him. I thought about it for a minute. I considered that uncle Eldrid was a very religious fellow and probably wouldn't want no dog buried with him so I turned to the neighbor and said sure, no problem.

And after everyone left we did the deed.

Thought you might like that story.

Break the monotony a little.

Don

24. Maybe I stopped at that gas station. I grew up in Watseka
know where that is? My parents, now deceased, continued to live there. My brother still lives there. I get back occasionally. So, I've been to Momence. Lots of racism in central Illinois, but more of a quiet racism while I was growing up. There were so few minorities in our communities that people didn't talk about race often. But, I remember the isolated comments, vividly.

31. This story would make for a fantastic short story essay in Red Book Mag.
Of course flesh out the Uncle a bit... Its a story that is worthy of publishing as a short story essay that could be read by lots of people, not just a blog post. Short stories are sooo underappreciated and the lessons within are normally great ones. Who will ever forget "The Lottery". Anyhoo, think about making this story into a modern short story classic.. Best part is that it happened and Karma, fate, or whatever made for true poetic justice.

34. And in the afterlife that dog was a Hell Hound to escort him to the gates of Hades
Edited on Sat May-22-10 11:55 AM by NBachers
It's funny- if Eldrid had been a kindly, loving old man, the dog would've been a companion of comfort and solace there for eternity. As it is, the torment Eldrid created in life is being visited upon him forevermore.

The old neighbor had lived out his life to wait out Eldrid and perform this task of justice.

How many times have I looked upon the public monsters who have spawned in my lifetime and wished their sins to be visited upon them throughout the mists of infinity.

52. I have relatives in Momence and great memories of Thanksgiving w/ my great aunt
and family and of staying there one summer when I was a kid, playing in the park by the river, looking for arrowheads in the corn fields and watching the Illinois Central trains go by (it is a quiet little town!). My aunt's behavior was the opposite of your uncle's. I visited my cousin last year and was shocked at how much of the downtown was shuttered--probably due to the nearby Walmart and chains in Kankakee.

56. Speaking of dogs and burials
One obscure historical footnote.
J. Edgar Hoover, beloved by few and feared by many, is buried in a small cemetery in Washington, D.C. that is a popular place for local residents to walk their dogs.
I often think of old J. Edgar lying low while one of gods better creatures shits on his grave. Gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.
